SumUp is building its own acquiring capability in Europe, and this role is part of a growing Payments team working on the next generation of SumUp's payment capabilities. You'll join a cross-functional, autonomous squad within the Payments Tribe, based in Sofia, working on foundational systems that improve reliability, scalability and flexibility of the platform. As a Senior Software Engineer on the EU Own Acquiring team, you will help design and build core acquiring capabilities including authorisation, clearing and settlement processing. You'll develop the APIs, data models and services that form the foundation of the acquiring platform, and build reporting, back-office and operational tools for reliable day-to-day operations. Key responsibilities include: - Design and build core acquiring capabilities (authorisation, clearing, settlement processing) - Develop APIs, data models and services for the acquiring platform foundation - Build reporting, back-office and operational tools - Ensure systems meet card-scheme, security and compliance requirements - Create strong observability, monitoring and incident-response foundations for an always-on payments platform - Work closely with teams across Processing, Reconciliation, Risk, Compliance, Finance and Treasury - Contribute to architecture discussions and make sound technical decisions in an ambiguous, evolving domain - Take ownership of medium-to-large technical initiatives spanning multiple teams - Identify and help prioritise technical debt, operational risks and platform improvement opportunities - Support team growth through mentoring, code reviews and shaping testing and on-call practices You'll work on greenfield components with the opportunity to influence architectural decisions and shape engineering practices. The role offers exposure to highly critical infrastructure from the ground up, with real-world impact on millions of small business merchants globally. QUALIFICATIONS: Required: - 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including hands-on experience with Go - Experience building and consuming APIs in production environments - Understanding of software architecture, design principles, data modelling, API design and SOLID principles - Experience working with SQL and NoSQL databases; PostgreSQL and Kafka experience valuable - Practical experience with Docker, AWS and Kubernetes - DevOps mindset and interest in building, operating and improving owned systems - Strong problem-solving skills and ability to investigate complex issues methodically - Collaborative approach and openness to feedback - Strong sense of ownership and accountability Advantages: - Experience with Elixir or another functional programming language - Experience with AWS Prometheus and Grafana - Experience in fintech, payments or another regulated domain - Knowledge of card schemes, acquiring, authorisation, clearing or settlement Note: You do not need to know the acquiring domain already. Technical foundation, curiosity and willingness to learn are what matter.
