Panthalassa is a renewable energy and ocean technology company developing devices (nodes) that capture energy from the ocean in harsh conditions without human maintenance. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Core Systems team, you will design, develop, and optimize onboard data systems that enable reliable communication between ocean-deployed nodes and shore-side infrastructure.
You will own the network-facing software layers that allow nodes to communicate reliably with shore, from low-level connection handling to higher-level data exchange protocols. Key responsibilities include designing egress pipelines that balance data fidelity, timeliness, and bandwidth constraints; collaborating on APIs and schemas for control and data exchanges between subsystems; and ensuring software degrades gracefully during connectivity loss with proper buffering, retry logic, and prioritized retransmission.
You will partner with network and security engineers to review onboard software for vulnerabilities, harden network-facing services, and ensure interfaces meet security standards before deployment. You will analyze system performance and implement optimizations for latency, throughput, and resource efficiency. Additionally, you will extend and improve existing unit testing frameworks, integration tests, and CI/CD pipelines, and strengthen code review, documentation, and software engineering practices within the team.
The role requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to thrive in a creative, collaborative environment where you own designs from concept through fabrication and deployment at sea. You will communicate effectively across team and discipline boundaries and participate in design reviews and architecture discussions.
The company is a public benefit corporation headquartered in Portland, backed by leading venture capitalists, philanthropic investors, and university endowments. The team includes engineers from SpaceX, Blue Origin, Boeing, Tesla, Apple, Google, Amazon, and other leading organizations.
