Starburst is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Control Plane team, which is responsible for converging the control planes of Starburst Enterprise Platform (self-managed) and Starburst Galaxy (fully managed SaaS) into a unified platform.
You will design and build backend services and cloud infrastructure that operate in both deployment models: multi-tenant SaaS at global scale and customer-operated on-premise/air-gapped deployments. This role offers the opportunity to work on complex distributed systems problems while competing at global scale in the data analytics space.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain control plane services shared by Starburst Enterprise, Starburst Galaxy, and Trino
- Contribute to the Unified Control Plane by consolidating capabilities (access control, multi-cluster management, routing, catalog management, observability) into a single implementation serving both SaaS and self-managed deployments
- Own reliability, scalability, and efficiency of services you build, including API provisioning, cluster lifecycle management, and operational tooling
- Build for two operating models simultaneously: a service Starburst operates at scale and software customers deploy across AWS, Azure, GCP, and on-premise
- Provide thoughtful code review and design feedback to peers
- Continuously improve engineering processes, tests, and systems to enable team and codebase scaling
- Collaborate with globally distributed team members in a fast-paced environment with minimal formal meetings
- Provide exceptional support for internal and external customers
- Periodically assist with React/TypeScript Portal UI (frontend knowledge beneficial but not required)
The role emphasizes focused work, clear written communication (Slack, GitHub, design docs), and autonomous ownership. You'll work with a globally distributed engineering team on core platform infrastructure.
Requirements:
- Prior experience developing distributed systems
- Extensive software development experience with Java
- Cloud infrastructure architecture and orchestration experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
- Experience building and operating backend services that others depend on (APIs, control loops, lifecycle management)
- Hands-on adoption of AI coding tools and agents in day-to-day engineering with sound judgment about their application
- Demonstrated software engineering and design best practices
- Ability to create maintainable, performant, high-quality software in a high-performing team
- Intrinsic motivation for improving software engineering craftsmanship
- Comfort with significant autonomy and ownership
- Curiosity about other engineering teams' work and ability to connect dots across systems
- Demonstration of Ownership, Grit, and Bias for Action (core Starburst values)
