Join Coinbase's Institutional Foundations team as a Senior Software Engineer, Backend, owning core backend services that power the institutional client lifecycle. You'll be part of the Client Lifecycle pillar, responsible for taking institutional clients from application through first trade and enabling them to operate independently on Coinbase Prime.
You will own and evolve backend services spanning onboarding, provisioning, client data management, and access controls. Key responsibilities include:
- Owning backend services that move institutional clients from application to first trade, including Unified Business Onboarding, KYC Refresh, and provisioning systems.
- Driving onboarding automation initiatives such as automated screening, risk scoring, and auto-provisioning to enable low-risk clients to complete onboarding without manual ops intervention.
- Leading the design and implementation of the Organizations Service as the authoritative source of truth for institutional client data, ensuring data quality, entity uniqueness, and decoupling from Salesforce.
- Partnering cross-functionally with Product, Compliance, Onboarding Ops, Identity, and Prime product teams to ship onboarding and access controls for new products including FCM, Hudson derivatives, and Prime Custody.
- Shaping the access-control stack (roles, permissions, policies, and consensus mechanisms) to enable complex institutions to operate on Prime independently without opening support tickets.
- Mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar through design reviews, incident response leadership, and operational excellence practices.
Coinbase is a remote-first but not remote-only company. Expect quarterly in-person "surge" sessions for intensive collaborative work. The environment is high-intensity and uncompromising on mission execution.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of experience building and maintaining production backend services in a service-oriented architecture
- Production experience with Go (or similar languages), gRPC/Protobuf, relational data stores, and observability tooling
- Demonstrated practice of writing well-tested, production-grade code with high test coverage and structured code review habits
- Comfort working in regulated, high-integrity domains such as identity, access control, KYC/AML, or financial onboarding
- Ability to utilize generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality
