SumUp is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Lending team, which operates a core credit product serving small merchants across Europe and Brazil. You will be a technical anchor on the Servicing squad, operating with real autonomy to challenge existing patterns and drive improvements rather than simply maintain the status quo.
In this role, you will build and maintain backend services powering SumUp's lending platform using Go. Key responsibilities include strengthening observability and monitoring to measure system health and catch issues proactively, writing integration tests to protect release reliability, and helping adapt the platform to new regulatory requirements as SumUp expands into new markets. You will also contribute to exploring and implementing new loan repayment flows and investigate production incidents while balancing fast fixes with long-term platform stability.
This is a role for someone energized by complex, live systems who is comfortable owning hard trade-offs between speed and stability, and excited to help scale a regulated, high-stakes platform without breaking what already works.
SumUp is a global fintech serving over 4 million small businesses across 39 markets, providing tools for payments, finance, and customer relationships. The company has over 4,000 employees from 90+ nationalities and is committed to diversity, inclusion, and continuous learning.
The São Paulo office is office-first. Benefits include virtual stock options, an annual L&D budget of R$ 10,000, 22 working days of paid leave plus public holidays, Wellhub membership and on-site gym, contributions to a private retirement plan with Santander, and access to Zenklub for mental wellness support.
Requirements:
- Strong knowledge of backend development with clear focus on code quality and performance
- Experience questioning how existing systems work and proposing concrete, practical improvements
- Comfort working with observability and monitoring tools to understand system behavior and define meaningful metrics
- Track record of using integration tests to validate service reliability
- Ability to weigh deadlines against quality when building or evolving production systems, and to explain trade-offs clearly
