Project Canary is a climate technology company building an enterprise data platform that helps energy companies improve and report on their emissions footprint. The platform combines high-fidelity sensors, multi-source data ingestion, and proprietary analytics to deliver actionable insights for reducing emissions, stopping leaks faster, and streamlining regulatory reporting. We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer to own meaningful production systems and contribute across our full technology stack. This role leans toward backend engineering but expects comfort contributing wherever the product needs you. You will design and build production applications across backend services and web interfaces, take on complex backend problems, solve for reliability and performance, and contribute to technical and architectural decisions within the team. You'll work in fast feedback loops with relatively few layers between idea and implementation, partnering closely with product, engineering, and company leadership. What "Senior" means here: You make sound technical decisions and clearly explain the tradeoffs behind them. You work effectively through ambiguity, turning unclear problems into actionable solutions. You independently own complex technical work from problem definition through delivery, deliver reliably, and adjust execution based on business priorities. You contribute meaningfully to architecture, technical decisions, and engineering practices, and improve the quality of systems and code around you. Senior Engineers here are strong individual contributors expected to bring judgment, initiative, and technical depth. Our application stack is primarily .NET, C#, Entity Framework Core, and React. This is a full-stack role with a backend lean. We especially value engineers with strong backend fundamentals who are comfortable contributing to frontend work, can transfer experience from Java/Spring Boot into our .NET environment, and get productive quickly in unfamiliar technologies. You do not need deep experience in every part of our stack on day one; we care more about the strength of your engineering fundamentals, how quickly you learn, and how you approach unfamiliar problems. We expect engineers to use AI and development tools where they improve speed, learning, and productivity. At the same time, you should understand and explain the code you ship, evaluate technical decisions independently, review generated code critically, identify bugs and troubleshoot without relying on tools to do the reasoning, and recognize when a generated solution is wrong or overly complex. We are drawn to engineers who have developed range and can bring lessons from different technologies, systems, and problem spaces to new challenges. Strong candidates have expanded their scope through new systems, domains, or increased responsibility; are comfortable stepping outside their primary expertise when needed; learn unfamiliar systems and domain concepts quickly; and connect product needs, customer impact, and technical design. As a mid-stage startup, priorities evolve and documentation is not always perfect. We value engineers who thrive in environments with evolving structure, take ownership of learning new systems and domains, proactively identify next steps, are comfortable on small teams where engineers contribute broadly, and stay anchored to business goals. Experience particularly relevant but not required: exposure to complex data problems including systems interacting with physical processes, geospatial or spatial data, combining multiple data streams to infer meaningful signals, problems requiring modeling or interpretation, and production applications built with .NET/C#, Java/Spring Boot, React, or comparable technologies. This is a hybrid role based in downtown Denver, Colorado. The company values in-person collaboration and builds best when engineers spend meaningful time working side by side. REQUIREMENTS: - Demonstrated ability to reason through complex systems and make sound engineering decisions - Evidence of technical depth from designing and shipping production systems, building products from 0 to 1 in ambiguous environments, working across different systems/technologies/problem domains, research/open-source contributions, solving problems requiring thoughtful system design and tradeoff analysis, or developing and maintaining production web applications and services - Strong backend fundamentals with comfort contributing to frontend work - Ability to transfer experience from comparable technologies (e.g., Java/Spring Boot) into new environments - Ability to get productive quickly in unfamiliar technologies and take ownership of learning - Ability to work effectively through ambiguity and independently own complex technical work - Clear reasoning behind technical decisions with ability to articulate tradeoffs - Comfort in startup environments with evolving structure and priorities - Ability to understand and explain code you ship, evaluate technical decisions independently, and reason from first principles when needed
