Salary: NZD 120,000 - 150,000 / annual
Auror is a 13-year-old New Zealand company tackling organized retail crime—a $150 billion global problem—by connecting people and intelligence. The company works with leading retailers across the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, and is increasingly leveraging AI to enhance detection, customer support, and internal workflows.
This is a brand-new Senior Software Engineer role focused on Auror's Subject Recognition (ASR) technology, which runs across a global edge estate on cameras and servers in thousands of retail stores worldwide. You will own and evolve this edge capability, making the estate observable, reliable, upgradeable, and supportable at scale while developing new detection, recognition, and AI capabilities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and building new subject recognition capabilities using third-party SDKs and integrations, spanning on-camera processing, in-store servers, and Auror's cloud platform
- Building comparison harnesses and evaluation tooling to quantify how new face recognition models or engine versions perform, calibrating thresholds and interpreting score distributions so changes go to production with evidence
- Designing and implementing observability through tracing, structured logging, metrics, and alerting to give support teams and customers' SOC/IT teams visibility into remote systems
- Improving reliability and resilience of the edge estate and debugging complex production issues spanning process, container, host, network, and cloud layers
- Integrating and managing third-party SDKs and hardware dependencies, diagnosing issues and working directly with vendors
- Building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for artifacts deployed to physical devices to safely deliver functionality and upgrades at scale
- Working primarily in .NET and C# within the ASR software engineering team while collaborating across the company
You'll work closely with product, engineering, and commercial teams to define the role's scope and impact. As Auror expands globally, the systems, capabilities, and standards you establish will enable that growth. This role offers genuine ownership of a complex physical-meets-software problem with the opportunity to shape the future of edge AI at Auror.
The engineering team ships code to production 10-15 times daily with minimal defects, works on cloud-native architecture, uses modern tech stacks (React/TypeScript frontend, C#/.NET backend, Azure hosting), and maintains a coaching culture focused on continuous improvement.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of experience in software, systems, or infrastructure engineering, with production experience owning systems running on devices or infrastructure outside your company's direct control
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience designing, building, and operating capabilities spanning edge devices and cloud services
- Production experience with containerized workloads on edge or embedded Linux devices (IoT Edge, Balena, k3s, or equivalent)
- Strong debugging skills across process, container, host, network, and cloud boundaries with a detective instinct for root-cause analysis
- Hands-on experience with observability tooling: distributed tracing, structured logging, metrics, and alerting design
- Practical evaluation skills, including building comparison harnesses to quantify performance differences and interpreting trade-offs (latency, accuracy, compute constraints)
- Experience integrating third-party SDKs, hardware, and vendor dependencies into production software
- Cloud platform fluency (GCP preferred; AWS or Azure with demonstrated transferable skills acceptable)
- Familiarity with .NET and C# ideal, or ability to quickly become effective in new languages and tech stacks
- Strong project leadership and communication skills with ability to own complex work and collaborate across Product, Engineering, and commercial teams
- Alignment with Auror's Guiding Principles (available on careers page)
