Join Xero's AI Enablement team as a Senior Software Engineer, where you'll build internal tools and platforms that help engineers across the organization work more effectively with AI. This is an end-to-end ownership role: you'll move projects from early experimentation through production, including runbooks, monitoring, and rollback strategies that ensure reliability at scale.
You'll have real influence on Xero's AI strategy. Your work will shape the technical direction of an internal skills marketplace and AI distribution platform used organization-wide. You'll collaborate directly with vendors like AWS, Microsoft, and GitHub on early-access technology not yet publicly available, and help guide a team still early in its AI journey.
The AI Enablement team sits within Engineering Experience and focuses on platforms, tooling, and practical guidance rather than standard off-the-shelf solutions. The team is distributed across Melbourne, Sydney, and the Sunshine Coast, with a product manager in Wellington. Despite the geographic spread, the team maintains close collaboration through regular syncs and a genuinely collaborative working style.
Initially, you'll focus on building an internal skills marketplace and distribution platform for AI tools, developing guidance and best practices for authoring agent skills (including agents for remediation tasks), and collaborating with AWS, Microsoft, and GitHub on emerging technology.
The current tech stack is C#, .NET, and AWS, with Python and TypeScript used for AI tooling. You can be based anywhere in Australia or New Zealand. The team works hybrid with regular in-person boost days for planning and collaboration.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Hands-on software engineering experience, ideally with C#, .NET, and AWS (experience with other stacks is acceptable; strong engineers pick up new stacks quickly)
- Track record of building internal tools or platforms that other engineers genuinely relied on
- Production discipline: you write runbooks, set up monitoring, and think through rollback strategies before deployment
- Clear communication skills and ability to bring people along with ideas, not just ship code in isolation
- Curiosity about coding agents and AI-native tools; awareness of where AI engineering is heading
- Ability to challenge decisions directly and respectfully, and to learn new things in a structured, quality-focused way
