Xero's Accounting Core team builds the foundational systems that power accurate, dependable accounting records for small businesses. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will own significant end-to-end initiatives—from technical design through production—helping to decouple key accounting capabilities from the mature monolithic architecture and create safer, more scalable paths for change across invoices, payments, bank transactions, and reconciliation. You will stay hands-on in production code, working through critical trade-offs where accounting-data integrity and scalability matter. You'll collaborate closely with partner teams to ensure changes to the accounting engine support other Xero teams built on Accounting Core. As the Vancouver Accounting Core team grows, you'll also help raise engineering practices and quality standards. Key technical challenges include: decoupling a mature accounting platform to create clearer domain ownership without compromising accounting record integrity; designing and evolving reliable services for critical financial data at scale; building shared foundations that other product teams can rely on confidently; and making incremental architectural improvements while continuing to deliver value. The role is based in Vancouver with a hybrid model: work from home with 1–2 "boost days" per week in the office for collaboration and complex problem-solving. REQUIREMENTS: - Proven track record delivering highly available, distributed systems and high-throughput services on cloud-native platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) - Demonstrated end-to-end ownership of significant work, from design through rollout and production validation, including technical decision-making - Strong architectural thinking and trade-off analysis (API design, data store selection, balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainability) - Proficiency in a modern backend stack (Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Ruby, or C++); willingness to learn C# and .NET (existing experience a bonus) - Passion for staying hands-on, contributing to production code, technical deep dives, and using AI tools with good judgment - Commitment to mentoring peers, sharing technical knowledge, and helping teammates grow through code reviews, pairing, and documentation
