Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior Technical Project Manager to join the Project Management Office and drive next-generation High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnet systems development. This role manages a portfolio of small to mid-sized R&D projects and serves as the primary technical liaison between the executive team, internal engineering teams, and external partners during scale-up efforts. Key responsibilities include: - Managing R&D project portfolios while leading and advising others on project management best practices - Acting as primary technical liaison with executives, engineering teams, and external partners - Understanding and managing technical tradeoffs between research objectives and operational needs (scalability, design for manufacturability, material selection, coating technologies, tolerancing) - Ensuring projects are staffed with appropriate skill mixes to meet commitments - Developing comprehensive project plans with scope, goals, deliverables, resources, and timelines - Leading cross-functional matrix teams of engineers, designers, analysts, procurement specialists, and other stakeholders - Fostering collaborative, high-performance team culture - Monitoring project timelines rigorously and implementing mitigation strategies for delays - Managing risks throughout project lifecycle: identifying risks, developing mitigation plans, and keeping stakeholders informed The role requires working in a facility with industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics. Occasional travel and willingness to work nights/weekends/on-call is required. REQUIREMENTS: - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Science, Engineering, or related field with PMP or equivalent Project Management certification - 10+ years of technical experience, minimum 5 years as a project manager leading new product integration - Proven project management experience including scope/requirements definition, schedule management, risk management, budget management, and stakeholder/communications management - Experience acting as technical liaison with executive teams, internal engineering teams, and external suppliers - Strong problem-solving skills and ability to mobilize multi-disciplinary teams - Collaborative team member and servant leader - Proficient in driving decision-making and execution with available resources - Capable of leading strategic ideation and operational execution - Excellent communication skills across varying technical proficiency levels BONUS QUALIFICATIONS: - PMP or equivalent Project Management certification - Experience managing projects with budgets exceeding $10M and teams of 15+ matrixed personnel - Demonstrable expertise in development, fabrication, and testing large, complex prototypes or processes - Familiarity with fusion power technology risks and challenges (cryogenics, vacuum, high current electrical systems, molten salts)
