Atom Computing is seeking a Senior Quantum Theorist with deep expertise in atomic physics to lead theoretical and computational research driving the development of neutral atom quantum computers. In this role, you will lead independent and collaborative projects that advance understanding and development of neutral atom quantum computing systems. You will drive the development and architecture of atomic physics simulations, translating them into high-quality, maintainable software solutions. You'll identify and propose new research directions, tools, and methods—including AI-assisted approaches—that accelerate the team's theoretical and computational work. You will collaborate closely with Quantum Engineering, QEC Theory, and AMO Theory teams to model experimental results, develop noise models for quantum hardware, and inform the design of neutral-atom quantum computers. As a senior member of the team, you will mentor junior AMO Theorists and help establish best practices for theoretical and computational work across the organization. The role requires writing clean, well-tested, and documented code in multiple languages, preferably Python, Julia, or C++. You will work in a fast-growing startup environment where self-motivation, collaboration, and comfort with ambiguity are essential. REQUIREMENTS: - PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field - 5+ years of post-PhD experience in research or the quantum industry - Extensive experience with scientific, high-performance, or quantum computing - Deep understanding of atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics; experience with or modeling of Rydberg atoms is particularly valued - Demonstrated track record of independent research leadership with strong publication record - Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to convey complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences - Familiarity with modern software development practices: version control, unit testing, continuous integration, and documentation; public examples of past work demonstrating coding quality (e.g., GitHub) - Experience with or strong interest in applying AI tools (LLMs, ML-based modeling, optimization methods) to accelerate research and engineering workflows - Temperamentally suited to startup environment: self-motivated, humble, driven, collaborative, with high tolerance for ambiguity
