Heirloom is building Energy Park P1, a first-of-its-kind clean power plant that pairs a 1.1 GWh battery energy storage system (BESS) and on-site solar generation with zero-emission clean energy to power a hyperscale data center with no grid connection. As Senior Project Engineer for Solar & BESS, you will own the solar and storage package end-to-end, from supplier selection through system energization, on a small team where your technical decisions shape both this flagship project and the template for future deployments.
You will translate electrical and controls requirements into solar, BESS, and operations & maintenance scopes of work, specifications, and datasheets. You'll lead design reviews with integrators, engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) firms, and the owner's engineer, covering layouts, medium-voltage collection, protection schemes, SCADA/energy management system integration, and fire safety. You own technical integration of solar and BESS with on-site generation and data center loads, including microgrid operating modes. You'll support hazard analysis (HAZOP/HAZID, FMEA), NFPA 855 hazard mitigation, UL 9540A review, and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) and fire marshal engagement.
On the procurement side, you'll collaborate with Supply Chain on supplier outreach, requests for information (RFIs), and requests for proposals (RFPs). You'll manage bidder Q&A, prepare technical bid evaluations and leveled bid tabs, and recommend awards. You'll negotiate technical terms, warranties, performance guarantees, delivery schedules, and collect domestic content and supply chain documentation for tax credit eligibility.
During construction and commissioning, you'll oversee contractor and vendor engineering progress, inspections, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), delivery, installation, and energization. You'll lead commissioning, capacity and performance testing, punch-list closeout, and deliver turnover packages and operations readiness documentation to the O&M provider.
You'll maintain the solar and BESS schedule, track long-lead equipment, and flag risks early. You'll validate vendor pricing against benchmarks and the financial model, manage change orders, and develop engineering procedures, design guides, and lessons learned for future deployments.
The role presents a fast schedule, a behind-the-meter microgrid with multiple energy sources, and the challenge of holding suppliers to performance commitments on a flagship project.
REQUIREMENTS:
The posting does not explicitly state years of experience, specific certifications, or educational requirements. However, the role expects senior-level expertise in solar and battery energy storage system design, integration, and project delivery; experience with microgrid controls and SCADA integration; familiarity with relevant standards (NFPA 855, UL 9540A); procurement and vendor management experience; and the ability to lead technical design reviews and commissioning activities. The company notes that candidates do not need to tick every box and encourages applications from those passionate about the opportunity.
