Salary: CAD 167,400 - 209,200 / annual
Xero is seeking a Senior Product Manager to own the architecture underneath accounts payable and bill payments. The role focuses on the API contracts, data-access models, and permission architecture that determine what people and AI agents can read, write, and pay on behalf of customers.
You will own the layer serving over one million monthly active users globally—small business owners, finance staff, and professional bookkeepers. The mandate is to build the architecture that makes automated, agent-assisted, and human-directed spend coherent, safe, and trustworthy across Xero's bills surface and integrations with Claude, Copilot, and the open-source MCP server.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop vision, strategy, and roadmap for the API, data-access, and permission layer in partnership with a principal engineer.
- Define contracts, data models, and permission scopes that determine what clients (Xero UI, partner integrations, AI agents) can read, write, approve, and pay.
- Decide where authority sits: what requires human confirmation, what agents may do unattended, what needs second approval, and what cannot be automated.
- Sequence a replatform of a system serving 1M+ monthly active users, with migration paths, dual-running periods, and rollback plans that keep customers working.
- Own the cost and consequence of changing contracts other teams depend on, including versioning, deprecation, and breaking-change communication.
- Own products across the complete accounts payable journey: bill capture, coding, approval routing, payment execution, reconciliation, and exception handling.
- Lead customer research across distinct user types (owners, finance staff, bookkeepers) and design for conflicting interests.
- Define how AI and agents participate in accounts payable: what they suggest, act on, escalate, and how customers stay in control.
- Own the quality bar for LLM-powered capabilities—evaluation sets, confidence thresholds, human-in-the-loop design, and failure modes.
- Partner with Risk, Compliance, Legal, Security, and Operations to meet regulatory and security requirements across markets.
- Develop and execute roadmaps aligned with customer needs, AP strategy, platform architecture, and Xero's North America growth agenda.
- Establish product goals, success metrics, and OKRs; be accountable for moving them.
- Build strong relationships across Product, Engineering, Design, Risk, Compliance, Operations, Finance, Partnerships, and Go-to-Market teams.
- Mentor other Product Managers and raise the standard of platform and AI product expertise.
Success is measured through customer, operational, and commercial outcomes: automation and straight-through processing rates, bill payment adoption and volume, activation and retention across personas, platform and API reliability, and replatform pace without customer disruption.
The Bills team comprises 20+ engineers, designers, and product managers across Toronto, Vancouver, and Pittsburgh. This is a global role based in Toronto or Vancouver with flexibility to work remotely; the team collaborates in person regularly.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience shipping below the UI: delivered changes to APIs, integration layers, or shared services as part of a wider product. Ideally owned a public or partner API through a breaking change.
- Substantive AI product experience: shipped an LLM-powered capability customers actually used. Can discuss evaluations, failure modes, and confidence thresholds unprompted, including what the product got wrong in production and what was done about it. Uses AI aggressively in own work and prototypes in code.
- Multi-persona B2B product experience: built workflows serving several distinct user types with conflicting interests. Can name a specific trade-off made between two personas.
- Error-intolerant domains: built products where mistakes cost money or carry regulatory consequence (payments, payroll, tax, treasury, lending, legal, or clinical workflows).
- Significant product management experience.
