Salary: USD 130,000 - 160,000 / annual

Heron Power is building cutting-edge power electronics for grid modernization, focusing on solid-state transformers (SSTs) that connect large-scale renewables, storage, and loads to the grid. As Senior Power Electronics Test & Validation Engineer, you will own end-to-end application testing of Heron's SST across three core use cases: powering AI data centers, utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), and photovoltaic plants. You will bring up hardware in the lab and at pilot sites, write Python-based test automation to drive test equipment and power converters, and debug performance against application-specific demands. This includes validating ripple mitigation, backup capability, slew rates, power-loss profiles, MPPT performance, and PPC/EMS/BMS communication protocols. You will support SST and utility-scale BESS integration testing at pilot sites, covering EMS-to-SST communication, black start and grid-forming coordination, charge/discharge cycling, and round-trip efficiency measurements. Key responsibilities include owning Heron's first pilot deployments by reviewing field performance, identifying feature gaps, and collaborating with software and firmware teams to turn findings into product improvements. You will safely operate power converters, chillers, contactors, and protection hardware, set up cabling, instrumentation, and data acquisition systems for high-power test runs, and maintain test automation scripts that turn manual procedures into repeatable loops. You bring 5+ years of hands-on experience in power electronics, energy storage, EV, grid systems, or comparable hardware-intensive environments. You have a strong grasp of DC circuit fundamentals—resonances, parasitics, slew rates, inductive spikes—and can correlate test data with simulation results. Strong scripting and test-automation skills are essential, along with working knowledge of power conversion and battery systems: inverters, converters, BMS, DC pre-charge, contactors, protection, and thermal/cooling loops. You are comfortable with lab instrumentation (oscilloscopes, power analyzers, DAQ systems) and communication protocols such as CAN and Modbus TCP. A scrappy mindset and ability to execute under constraints are critical. Nice-to-haves include experience with solid-state transformers or grid-forming inverters, utility-scale BESS commissioning and grid-support functions, systems-level testing of power electronics or energy storage products, and hands-on experience with circuit and system simulation tools such as LTspice, Simscape, or PLECS.
