TRM Labs is an AI-powered intelligence platform helping public and private sector agencies investigate and disrupt crime by tracing illicit activity and building threat network operating pictures. The Data Platform team is seeking a Senior or Staff Software Engineer to build mission-critical systems and data services that analyze blockchain transaction activity at petabyte scale. In this role, you will: - Build highly reliable data services to integrate with dozens of blockchains, ensuring sub-second latency for querying blockchain data at scale. - Develop complex ETL pipelines that transform and process petabytes of structured and unstructured data in real-time. - Design and architect intricate data models for optimal storage and retrieval. - Oversee the deployment and monitoring of large database clusters with focus on performance and high availability. - Collaborate across departments with data scientists, backend engineers, and product managers to design and implement novel data models. - Identify opportunities to compress timelines and build scalable automation for routine tasks like cluster scaling, disk management, and environment provisioning. - Build observability dashboards and iterate based on stakeholder feedback using rapid iteration cycles (weeks, not months). TRM operates as a high-velocity, high-ownership team that expects clarity, follow-through, and impact. The company moves quickly—shipping in days what takes months elsewhere. You should expect priorities to change as the company experiments and iterates, work requiring high degrees of ambiguity, and a need for personal ownership and accountability. Close collaboration, frequent communication, and creative problem-solving are core to the environment. This role requires comfort navigating ambiguity, adjusting course as new information emerges, and maintaining focus in a fast-moving, intense environment focused on meaningful problems with real-world impact. AI fluency is a baseline expectation at TRM. You will be evaluated on applied AI fluency—using AI to accelerate repeatable workflows, structure and solve problems, improve output quality, and increase speed and leverage. TRM is a Series C company with $220M in total funding, backed by Goldman Sachs, Bessemer, Y Combinator, Thoma Bravo, and others. Headquartered in San Francisco, TRM operates as a distributed-first company with hubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Washington D.C., London, and Singapore. REQUIREMENTS: - Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or a related field. - 5+ years of hands-on experience architecting distributed system architecture, guiding projects from ideation through successful production deployment. - Exceptional programming skills in Python, with adeptness in SQL or SparkSQL. - Versatility across the data engineering spectrum in one or more of the following: - In-depth experience with data stores and engines (Iceberg, Trino, BigQuery, StarRocks, Citus). - Proficiency in data pipeline and workflow orchestration tools (Airflow, DBT). - Expertise in data processing technologies and streaming workflows (Spark, Kafka, Flink). - Competence in deploying and monitoring infrastructure in public cloud platforms (Docker, Terraform, Kubernetes, Datadog). - Proven ability in loading, querying, and transforming extensive datasets. - AI fluency as a baseline expectation.
