Qumulo is a software-defined cloud data platform built on a distributed storage operating system written in C and Rust. The platform manages exabytes of data across datacenters, edge, and cloud environments, serving mission-critical workloads from medical imaging archives to animation render farms where 99% correctness is insufficient.
As a Senior Member of Technical Staff, you will design and build across the distributed file system and block layer, working with a small team of experienced engineers to solve complex systems problems. You'll take designs from initial thesis through shipped code, leveraging AI coding tools while maintaining engineering judgment and ownership. Your work will span the fault-tolerant block layer with erasure coding, the transactional file system with real-time query capabilities across billions of files, and the services that enable storage, management, and data protection. You'll debug across protocol, file system, cache, network, and object store layers, finding correctness bugs that only surface under real-world conditions. Recent projects include federating namespace subtrees across regions and clouds, maintaining search index coherence with dynamic namespaces, and optimizing data delivery to GPU clusters.
Qumulo blends startup flexibility with the stability of a mature, profitable organization. You'll work closely with the same engineers you interview with, where opinions are expected, disagreement is normal, and you own designs end-to-end. The company values quality, correctness, and performance, with public architecture, protocols, and patents available for review before engagement.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years building systems software, including experience at the level of file system, kernel, database engine, compiler, driver, or distributed data path
- Proficiency in C, C++, or Rust (by choice)
- Daily use of AI coding tools with demonstrated complex projects that leveraged them; understanding of tool limitations and ability to delegate execution while retaining judgment
- Hands-on experience inside a real distributed system with demonstrated knowledge of concurrency, consistency, failure, and recovery
- Deep root-cause analysis capability and comfort working in unfamiliar codebases
- Bonus: experience with distributed file systems (NFS, SMB, S3), platforms (NetApp, PowerScale, Isilon, VAST, WEKA, Ceph, Lustre), indexing/query/search internals, or public open-source contributions
- Must be authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorship not available
- Hybrid role based in downtown Seattle HQ, targeting 3 days per week in-office
