Salary: USD 140,000 - 165,000 / annual
Atom Computing is building quantum computers using optically trapped neutral atoms. We seek a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Opto-Mechanical Engineering team, designing the physical systems—enclosures, chassis, thermal management, and cabling—that house and protect our control systems and instrumentation products. You will work closely with electrical, firmware, and systems engineers to translate functional requirements into manufacturable, reliable hardware, primarily for 19" rack-mount and pluggable instrumentation form factors.
This is a hands-on mechanical design role spanning the full product lifecycle: concept development, CAD modeling, analysis, prototyping, and production support. You will design enclosures, heat sinks, shields, and front panels; create and maintain detailed CAD models and assemblies; perform thermal and airflow analysis to ensure components operate within temperature limits; design sheet metal, extrusions, and machined parts; conduct tolerance studies (GD&T-based) for fit and manufacturability; collaborate with electrical engineers on PCB and power supply integration; support design reviews and validation testing; and work with manufacturing and suppliers to transition designs from prototype to production.
Reports to the Opto-Mechanical Engineering Manager.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BS in Mechanical Engineering
- 5+ years of mechanical engineering design experience in instrumentation or related fields
- Proficiency with CAD and simulation tools; SolidWorks and Ansys (Icepak, Mechanical, Fluent) preferred, though similar CAD/FEA/CFD tools acceptable
- Experience with mechanical fixtures for PCBs (supports, integration fixtures, multi-board design with FMC or similar board-to-board mating interfaces, heat sinks, shields, connectors)
- Solid understanding of thermal management for electronics: heat sink design, airflow/CFD analysis, component-level cooling
- Mechanical drawing and GD&T per ASME Y14.5M; tolerance stack analysis
- Experience with sheet metal design, fabrication methods, and cable/harness design
- Ability to work cross-functionally with electrical and systems engineers to balance mechanical, thermal, and electrical constraints
- Robust packaging of sensitive systems for shipping or extreme environments
- Comfortable moving between early-stage concept work and detailed production-ready design
DESIRED:
- Familiarity with pluggable instrumentation standards (MicroTCA, PXI, VPX) and modular PCB form factors (FMC)
- Experience with RF shielding and EMI/EMC design
- Electronics test fixture design experience
- Exposure to test & measurement or precision instrumentation products
- Experience supporting products through sustainment/value engineering post-release
- Familiarity with PLM and PDM tools
