Uber is launching AV Labs to accelerate the autonomous vehicle technology ecosystem. The company is building a high-velocity, multi-disciplinary team focused on unlocking real-world, long-tail driving data—the hardest problem in autonomous vehicles today. Uber collects rare, real-world driving data at scale and capital efficiency that competitors cannot match, positioning the company at the forefront of the autonomy data race. As a Senior Manufacturing Design Engineer, you will drive the design and development of early exploration platforms and foundational technology building blocks that directly influence next-generation autonomous vehicle architecture. You will leverage a strong engineering background and proven ability to navigate high ambiguity to proactively lead multi-functional engineering teams alongside hardware vendors, technology suppliers, and Tier-1 partners. Your work will span the definition, prototyping, and proof-of-concept of AV technologies including advanced sensing platforms (LiDAR, Radar, Cameras), custom compute architectures, and hardware-software integration layers. You will apply situational program management to organize, align, and orchestrate high-impact R&D roadmaps from raw concepts through architectural validation and physical prototype integration. Core responsibilities include: architecting the production process by designing, validating, and deploying custom fixtures, jigs, and tooling that enable safe and efficient assembly operations; owning the tooling lifecycle from CAD design to shop-floor deployment. You will build, structure, and maintain accurate Manufacturing Bills of Materials (MBOMs), acting as the gatekeeper for part accuracy and control. You will drive the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process for all manufacturing tooling and production parts, managing version control to ensure the shop floor builds with correct fixture revisions. You will work directly with internal machine shops or external vendors to fabricate fixture designs, selecting appropriate materials (tool steels, aluminum, plastics) and specifying tolerances using GD&T. Finally, you will spend time on the production floor observing fixture usage, gathering feedback from assembly technicians, and iterating to improve tooling for better safety and cycle times. The role requires at least 50% in-office presence in Sunnyvale unless approved for full remote work. REQUIREMENTS: Basic Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Industrial Technology - 5+ years of manufacturing design engineering (MDE) experience leading multi-functional engineering teams through early-stage technical ambiguity, milestone planning, and release gating criteria - Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD (Solidworks, NX, or Catia) - Deep understanding of core principles of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) - Experience developing process DFMs and driving corrective actions and failure analysis efforts - Direct, hands-on experience supporting a live production line and troubleshooting manufacturing issues in real-time - Proven track record of managing external hardware vendors and suppliers to deliver complex fixtures on time with high quality Preferred Qualifications: - Direct experience managing specialty automotive build partners, prototype vehicle upfits, custom retrofits, or Tier-1/OEM integration programs - Familiarity with core autonomous vehicle architecture and building blocks, including sensing platforms (LiDAR, Radar, Cameras), vehicle integration and bringups - Exceptional communication skills with demonstrated ability to bring transparency, resolve conflicts, and drive priorities across complex, multi-organization environments without direct authority - Vendor management experience and ability to handle conflicts and command vendors to implement actions and deliver results
