You will lead a developing underwriting team as a hands-on manager with a dual focus: 50% direct case underwriting and 50% team leadership and operational optimization. This is an ideal role for a natural leader passionate about mentoring and developing underwriting talent.
Key Responsibilities:
- Dedicate 50% of your time to hands-on case underwriting
- Lead the underwriting team with passion, positivity, and a commitment to continual improvement
- Partner with the Chief Underwriter and senior leadership to recruit, hire, mentor, and develop underwriting staff across domestic and international locations
- Assess team quality and headcount needs; perform hiring analysis to support company growth
- Design and enhance onboarding and underwriting training programs
- Develop performance management and quality control systems; provide feedback, guidance, and performance reviews
- Build technical and decision-making skills in underwriting staff while reinforcing core values
- Drive strategic initiatives to optimize underwriting workflows, including implementing rules in underwriting engines and recommending best practices
- Collaborate with Underwriting Strategies on quality assurance testing of automated rules and processes
Qualifications and Requirements:
- 10 to 15 years of life underwriting experience (US-based underwriting experience preferred)
- 7+ years in an underwriting leadership or development role
- Underwriting certification (LOMA/ALU) highly beneficial
- Extensive knowledge of life insurance trends and emerging technology
- Sharp execution focus with an owner mentality and proven track record of timely delivery
- Data-oriented decision-making skills with strong intuition
- Outstanding written and verbal communication abilities
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
