Valar Atomics is building scalable, clean, high-temperature nuclear power systems to unlock abundant energy for industry, hydrogen production, and next-generation manufacturing. The company is constructing its first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah and is backed by Series A funding. You will lead the accounting function as a hands-on builder, not a caretaker. This role owns the month-end close end-to-end, including journal entry preparation, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and delivery of accurate financials against the close calendar. You will evolve the general ledger and financial structure to support a rapidly scaling business, with particular focus on fixed assets, construction-in-progress tracking, capitalization policy, and depreciation judgments—critical in a capital-intensive hardware and manufacturing environment. Key responsibilities include: - Leading month-end close and preparing internal reporting packages for leadership and investors - Owning GL maintenance, fixed assets, and construction-in-progress accounting - Driving audit readiness and owning technical accounting positions (ASC 718 equity/stock compensation, ASC 842 leases, ASC 606 revenue, capitalization determination) - Identifying and automating accounting workflows; documenting procedures, system architecture, and control narratives - Leading or supporting ERP, AP automation, and expense management system implementations - Developing and maintaining accounting policies and internal controls - Managing, mentoring, and developing the accounting team; building out roles, structure, and bench as the company scales - Serving as the accounting expert for operational and technical matters across the organization - Contributing to broader business initiatives with a "no job too small" mindset You will partner closely with Finance, HR, Software & Systems, Warehousing, and Operations, translating financial insight into actionable business intelligence. You anticipate issues early, create clarity from incomplete information, and build trust through consistent, reliable delivery. **Requirements:** - Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field - 8+ years of accounting experience, including hands-on ownership of month-end close and financial reporting/analysis - 3+ years managing and developing accountants (direct people management, not solely project or matrix leadership) - Demonstrated track record of building and scaling an accounting function from the ground up - Strong knowledge of US GAAP and general accounting principles - Hands-on experience with fixed assets and capitalization in a capital-intensive, hardware, or manufacturing environment - Comfort researching and documenting technical accounting positions independently - Experience at a startup, high-growth company, or similarly fast-paced environment - Proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks, NetSuite, Ramp) and Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint - Self-starter with excellent organizational skills, high tolerance for ambiguity, and strong cross-team communication **Preferred:** - Licensed CPA - Experience supporting or leading an ERP or systems implementation - Cost accounting experience in manufacturing or inventory-intensive environments - Exposure to VC-backed companies and investor reporting requirements - Public accounting background (Big 4 or regional firm) - Experience supporting external audits or audit preparation
