In this Senior Software Engineer role, you will design, build, and operate scalable backend systems that process thousands of financial transactions daily. You'll work with Kotlin and AWS to create resilient services handling customer money, collaborating with product managers, designers, and other engineers to deliver customer value. Key responsibilities include contributing to technical direction and architectural decisions, mentoring junior engineers, owning your team's code quality and delivery, participating in the full software development lifecycle including production operations, and writing well-tested, clean code with smart trade-offs between speed, quality, and risk.
The engineering culture emphasizes customer impact over unnecessary complexity, team success over individual heroics, operational ownership rather than just feature delivery, and continuous improvement through honest feedback. You'll work in a fast-moving environment with full ownership of your work, solving problems collaboratively in a distributed systems context.
The role is hybrid, requiring 2-3 days per week at the Manchester office (WeWork, Dalton Place, 29 John Dalton Street, M2 6WF). You'll have the option to work from abroad for up to 120 days per year (subject to right to work). The office is dog-friendly. REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong backend engineering experience using Kotlin or Java in production environments
- Passionate about building reliable, high-quality products with focus on testing, clean code, and automation
- Comfortable working on distributed systems with scale and complexity
- Clear communicator with cross-functional collaboration experience
- Experience mentoring others and raising technical standards
- Pragmatic approach to product delivery and trade-offs
- Fintech or banking experience is a plus but not required; problem-solvers from all backgrounds valued
