Vestmark is building AI-native wealth management technology, serving over $2 trillion in assets across 5+ million accounts. This Senior Java Software Engineer role focuses on designing and delivering agentic systems—workflows where AI plans, executes, and iterates toward outcomes—integrated into a production SaaS ecosystem trusted by major financial institutions. You will contribute across the full delivery lifecycle: design discussions, development, testing, deployment, and iteration. The role emphasizes AI-native development practices from day one, including code generation, prompt engineering, and agentic frameworks as standard workflow tools. You'll learn and apply the team's standards for building adaptive systems: state management, observability, non-determinism handling, and inference cost awareness. Testing and validation approaches will differ from traditional deterministic systems. You'll create clean, testable, maintainable solutions that strengthen the team's shared foundation, applying the principle "fix the process, don't automate the broken one." Participation in code reviews—both as reviewer and recipient—is expected as a learning opportunity. You'll engage actively in design reviews and architecture discussions, developing your point of view over time and taking feedback seriously for rapid application. The ideal candidate combines solid software engineering fundamentals with genuine AI fluency. You should have hands-on familiarity with AI-assisted development tools, use them regularly, and have opinions about them. Curiosity about agentic systems and awareness of where AI tooling is heading are essential. You approach ambiguous problems by asking good questions, breaking them down, and proposing reasonable approaches before jumping to solutions. You understand business context and why work matters, not just what needs building. You demonstrate learning velocity: ability to learn quickly and independently without waiting to be taught everything. You're receptive to feedback and apply it quickly, with evidence of intellectual curiosity beyond coursework—personal projects, open source contributions, or self-directed learning in AI or systems engineering. A product mindset is critical: you engage with the problem before the solution, ask why before how, and want to understand what you're building and whether it's the right thing to build. You form a point of view on what you're building and why it matters, treating requirements as a starting point for understanding the problem rather than fixed inputs. **Requirements:** - B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent work experience (M.S. a plus) - 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with focus on Java development; strong internship experience or personal project work considered - Backend Development: Strong expertise in Java and related frameworks (Spring, Spring Boot). Experience with modern architecture and design patterns. Strong algorithmic and object-oriented design skills. Recent experience with RESTful API design and implementations preferred. - Architecture: Proven experience designing and implementing scalable and resilient software architectures, emphasizing Java-based solutions. - Data Management: Strong knowledge of relational databases (MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, MongoDB). - Troubleshooting: Proven experience in in-depth root cause analysis for software issues. Knowledge of APM tools (Dynatrace, Splunk) desired. - Demonstrated AI tool fluency - Solid foundational knowledge of data structures, algorithms, system design basics, and production system behavior - Understanding of APIs, basic cloud concepts, and modern software delivery practices **Nice-to-haves:** - Hands-on experience with agentic frameworks, LLM APIs, or workflow orchestration tools - AWS or equivalent cloud environment experience - Background or coursework in financial services, mathematics, or quantitative disciplines - A project, contribution, or body of work you can speak to in depth
