Atom Computing is building quantum computers using optically trapped neutral atoms. We seek a Senior Hardware Engineer with deep expertise in high-speed mixed-signal design to lead the design, implementation, and deployment of custom electronic assemblies for our quantum computer control systems.
You will drive hardware strategy across multiple concurrent projects while remaining hands-on in tactical engineering work. Reporting to the Control Systems Manager, you will own the full lifecycle of high-speed mixed-signal front ends that interface with lasers and actuators controlling our quantum computers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design high-level system architectures for instruments, focusing on analog and RF front-end designs, signal conditioning, amplification stages, DAC/ADC selection, power and clocking schemes, and control/monitoring circuitry
- Research, simulate, prototype, evaluate, and design high-speed mixed-signal front ends for driving high-speed, high-resolution analog signals
- Collaborate with quantum engineers and cross-functional teams to understand system needs and define hardware design requirements
- Perform board-level circuit design, schematic capture, and PCB layout in Altium Designer
- Actively participate in bring-up, verification, and testing of control system hardware, working closely with FPGA, firmware, and software engineers
You will work in a fast-growing startup environment with a diverse team of experimental physicists, hardware engineers, and software engineers. The role is based in Boulder, Colorado.
Requirements:
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical field
- 5+ years of postgraduate professional experience in board-level analog and digital circuit design, preferably with Altium Designer
- Experience in full design cycles from concept through schematic capture, layout, fabrication, and board bring-up
- Working knowledge of PCB design best practices with keen attention to detail
- Mixed-signal design experience
- Demonstrated proficiency with electronic test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum and logic analyzers, signal generators) for prototype bring-up and debug
- Experience working on boards with complex ICs (FPGAs, processors) requiring multiple power supplies, high-speed buses, and high-speed memory interfaces
- Self-motivated, collaborative, and effective communicator
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with RF design concepts and/or software-defined radio
- Experience designing and characterizing high-speed data-converter systems for low phase noise, low spurious content, and high linearity
- Multi-gigabit serial transceiver lane design, evaluation, and equalization experience
- IBIS-AMI modeling and correlation for multi-gigabit serial interfaces
- High-speed memory interface design experience
- High-speed digital and analog I/O, connector/cable selection and characterization
- Scripting capability (e.g., Python) for data acquisition, instrument control, and hardware test automation
- Linux environment experience
- Familiarity with MicroTCA, PXIe, or similar pluggable instrument standards
