Ohalo Genetics seeks a Senior Greenhouse Facilities & Systems Engineer to lead the technical design, operation, and maintenance of their Watsonville/Aptos greenhouse and lab infrastructure. This role bridges hands-on facility maintenance with high-level systems engineering, requiring someone who can diagnose equipment failures, optimize automated HVAC logic, design custom components in CAD, and prototype replacement parts using 3D printing.
Key responsibilities include overseeing day-to-day operation and preventive/corrective maintenance of all site infrastructure: greenhouse structures, HVAC, irrigation and fertigation systems, electrical, plumbing, lighting, controls, and utilities. You will develop and manage a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track work orders, asset history, and planned maintenance schedules. Partner with greenhouse operations and research teams to plan facility modifications supporting evolving science programs, ensuring compliance with building codes, agricultural regulations, and company standards.
Manage relationships with third-party service providers, equipment vendors, and construction contractors, negotiating contracts and ensuring quality. Develop and manage site security systems including access control, surveillance, and perimeter security appropriate for an agricultural R&D environment. Oversee facilities-related aspects of hygiene, pest and disease prevention, structural exclusion measures, and environmental monitoring systems.
Support sustainability initiatives including water recapture, energy efficiency, and waste reduction. Lead, mentor, and develop a small in-house facilities and maintenance technician team, defining roles, setting performance goals, and managing staffing needs. Assist with site safety inspections, coordinate facilities-related emergency planning (fire suppression, backup power), and ensure proper chemical storage containment.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, or related), Environmental Health & Safety, or equivalent education/experience. 5+ years managing complex facility infrastructure with proven track record in heavy mechanical/electrical systems (HVAC, chillers, commercial electrical distribution, environmental control systems, automation). Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion360) and hands-on experience with 3D printing/rapid prototyping. Experience overseeing specialized technicians and service vendors. Proficiency with maintenance management systems and standard business software. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Valid California driver's license.
Preferred: EHS and Cal/OSHA knowledge with direct experience in California-based agricultural, biotech, or manufacturing settings. Experience managing contractors and controlling project budgets. Familiarity with California agricultural pesticide use reporting, Pesticide Use Permits, and Worker Protection Standard. Startup or fast-scaling environment experience. Bilingual English/Spanish.
