Altana is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Cloud Engineering team responsible for regulated and sovereign environments, including FedRAMP-accredited deployments and dedicated sovereign clusters for government customers. You will report to the Senior Director of Platform Engineering and manage a team of three to four engineers distributed across the US, UK, and Australia.
This role sits at the intersection of engineering excellence and regulatory compliance. The challenge is to transform compliance-constrained, connectivity-limited environments into a scalable platform where each new accredited deployment launches faster than the last, and product teams can ship without absorbing regulatory complexity themselves.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning the architecture and operation of regulated and sovereign environments across AWS and Azure, including Infrastructure-as-Code, Kubernetes, and release tooling
- Leading standardization of environment builds into repeatable blueprints to enable growth without proportional headcount increases
- Ensuring sound technical decisions through design reviews, RFCs, prototypes, and maintaining quality standards
- Staying hands-on with operational tooling and greenfield projects
- Embedding secure-by-default patterns with the Security and Compliance team and making control evidence routine
- Maintaining accreditations with vulnerability remediation inside SLA windows, current access reviews, and data-handling compliance
- Supporting critical infrastructure with high SLAs, progressive deployment strategies, and multi-region/HA environments
- Representing the team in audits, assessments, and customer-facing technical conversations about security and data residency
- Owning realistic planning processes that give implementation, commercial, and customer teams reliable go-live dates
- Building operational discipline across runbooks, documentation, capacity planning, on-call coverage, and incident response
- Managing environment costs and reporting on cost drivers
- Translating regulatory constraints into terms product and commercial teams can plan around
- Building strong cross-functional relationships with Implementations, Security & Compliance, Developer Experience, and product engineering
- Leading, coaching, and growing team members with full ownership of performance management, reviews, compensation, and career development
- Managing a distributed team across multiple time zones
- Assessing team structure and coverage, acting as hiring manager for open roles, and building recruiting pipelines
Requirements:
- Background in SRE or platform engineering leadership
- Direct experience managing engineers with full ownership of performance, growth, and hiring; ready to lead through other leads as the group grows
- 8+ years building and operating cloud infrastructure in production, including end-to-end environment ownership
- Direct experience delivering into US federal or other highly regulated government environments (FedRAMP or equivalent), with working understanding of how accreditation shapes engineering decisions
- Production experience building and operating environments in AWS and/or Azure
- Strong Infrastructure as Code skills with Terraform, OpenTofu, or similar; hands-on Kubernetes experience including cluster management and operational maintenance
- Strong software engineering fundamentals; ability to lead from the front on technical judgment, not just org chart
- Experience designing tooling and patterns for air-gapped and compliance-heavy infrastructure
- Track record of establishing operational practice on teams (runbooks, on-call, documentation, planning discipline) without slowing delivery
- Experience leading engineers across distant time zones with deliberate written communication
- Strong sense of shared ownership, collaborative disposition, and excellent written and verbal communication skills
- BS or MS in Computer Science, or equivalent experience
Nice to have:
- Eligibility for US security clearance
- Experience with non-US national accreditation regimes
- Experience taking a compliance program from zero through initial authorization and delta assessment
- Startup or high-growth technology company experience
