Coherence Neuro is a venture-backed neurotechnology company developing implantable therapeutic brain stimulation systems to treat debilitating cancers and neurological conditions. The company operates across multiple sites (US, UK, Australia) and is scaling rapidly to bring products to patients. You will own the neural recording and optical communication subsystems of SOMA, a fully implantable therapeutic brain stimulation device. This role takes these subsystems from bench prototype to implant-ready design, with responsibility for the complete analog and optoelectronic signal chain. Key responsibilities include: - Integrate the neural recording front end into the implant, including electrode interface, input protection, referencing, and coexistence with high-amplitude therapeutic stimulation - Define and execute the pathway to qualify recording electronics for chronic human implant use, working with quality, regulatory, and reliability teams - Own the optical data subsystem: source and detector selection, placement, drive and receive electronics, and link closure across required misalignment ranges - Characterize optical link performance through tissue phantoms (bit-error rate and misalignment tolerance) and translate results into design requirements - Model and verify thermal behavior of optical path and recording electronics inside the hermetic enclosure against tissue temperature limits within system power budget - Own the sensing and data-transmission physical layer (analog signal chain, modulation, bit-error performance) - Produce requirements, analyses, schematics, verification protocols, and reports suitable for the design history file under ISO 13485 - Share system-level design and test load with the power & stimulation lead; mentor and guide board-level work by junior engineers You will work as a peer with power & stimulation, implant compatibility, and firmware leads, reporting directly to the VP of Product Engineering and Manufacturing in a flat team structure. REQUIREMENTS: - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline; PhD with industry experience, or 6+ years of industry experience in analog/mixed-signal design - Track record designing low-noise, low-power analog front ends for biopotential or comparable microvolt-level sensing (noise, CMRR, input protection, artifact handling) - Hands-on optoelectronics experience: LED or laser drivers, photodiode and TIA receivers, optical link budgets - Taken circuits from schematic through bring-up, characterization, and debug; fluent with SPICE, oscilloscopes, and spectrum/network analyzers - Working understanding of power and thermal budgets in tightly constrained enclosures - Demonstrated technical leadership: owning systems with minimal oversight, defining requirements with technical leads, mentoring peers - Strong technical documentation and communication skills BONUS SKILLS: - Experience with neural recording ICs - Active implantable or Class II/III medical device development; familiarity with ISO 14708, IEC 60601, ISO 13485, ISO 14971 - Transcutaneous or free-space optical communication; tissue optics - Hermetic packaging, feedthroughs, rigid-flex or HDI design - Qualifying commercial components for high-reliability use in medical implants
