Pagaya is a high-growth fintech company building an AI-driven network to deliver consumer credit and residential real estate solutions at scale. The company currently operates $8–10B in volume per asset class and is actively scaling to achieve 3–4x growth over the next few years, with serious discussions underway to partner with 6+ Tier-1 institutional banks.
You will join as Senior Director, Associate General Counsel, reporting directly to the General Counsel. This is a highly visible, strategic role that serves as the primary legal interface between Pagaya's innovative technology platform and the complex regulatory and risk frameworks of major financial institutions.
Key responsibilities include:
• Leading frictionless due diligence and onboarding for Tier-1 institutional bank partners, managing ongoing legal strategy, relationship health, and evolving regulatory needs over time.
• Taking ownership of structuring, drafting, and negotiating complex program agreements, commercial agreements, and model engagement agreements—combining high-level strategic thinking with hands-on drafting leadership.
• Serving as the resident expert on consumer lending regulations, confidently guiding the business on regulatory flexibility while balancing innovation with compliance, and advocating for Pagaya's position with external partners.
• Championing robust data protection and privacy strategies to safeguard proprietary AI models, data pipelines, and confidential business information as the company scales and integrates with new institutional partners.
• Partnering closely with product and data science teams to ensure AI-driven underwriting compliance, proactively addressing fair lending requirements and algorithmic bias mitigation.
• Serving as a core strategic leader within the legal function, guiding and influencing cross-functional teams (Commercial, Product, Data, Research, and Risk) by translating complex regulatory constraints into actionable, long-term business strategies.
The ideal candidate brings specialized knowledge from a large traditional lender or established fintech platform, combined with a hands-on, builder mentality. You will be excited to leave your mark on a nimble, rapidly growing company and help scale a massive business.
**Requirements:**
• 8–15+ years of total legal experience, with 7–10 years of specialized expertise in consumer credit, retail banking, or lending partnerships.
• Expert-level command of US consumer credit and lending regulations, including TILA/Reg Z, ECOA/Reg B, FCRA, UDAP/UDAAP, and GLBA.
• Deep familiarity with bank-fintech origination structures, marketplace lending, and the "true lender" doctrine.
• Direct, proven experience navigating Third-Party Risk Management (TPRM), InfoSec, and compliance audits required by Tier-1 retail banks.
• Strong background in financial data protection, privacy, and intellectual property safeguarding within a technical, data-driven environment.
• Exceptional ability to articulate complex regulatory concepts clearly and persuasively, with presentation skills to build lasting relationships with risk-averse institutional partners.
• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one state bar.
Ideal backgrounds include SVP/Director of Legal in Consumer Banking, Deputy GC/Associate General Counsel of Fintech/Lending Partnerships, or Senior Counsel/Partner within a Financial Services Regulatory practice.
