As a Senior Data Engineer in Xero's G&A Data & Analytics team, you will design and build the data products, pipelines, and semantic layers that power decision-making across Finance, People Experience, and Legal functions. Your work will directly support financial performance insights, workforce reporting, and executive-level metrics shared with the Board and market.
You will own the design and maintenance of a governed semantic layer in Snowflake, translating business concepts into trusted metrics, dimensions, and definitions that make data accessible and reliable. You'll also help shape AI and agentic capabilities that enable conversational access to data, working with dbt as your primary tool for testing, documentation, and snapshotting.
The team is currently focused on consolidating revenue streams from recent acquisitions into a single reporting model, building and testing dbt models and snapshots for monthly financial and workforce reporting cycles, and extending the semantic layer to support conversational queries with appropriate guardrails.
You will work in a hybrid capacity, balancing remote focus work with in-office collaboration and team boost days. You'll act as a senior voice within the team—sharing patterns, mentoring others, and helping establish consistent standards for data modeling and validation. Collaboration with Finance, Legal, and People teams is essential, as you translate their questions into trusted, easy-to-use data products.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Hands-on experience building SQL data models, with dbt as your primary tool
