Oura is seeking a Senior CMF Quality Engineer to join the Supply Chain team in San Francisco. You will sit at the intersection of CMF Design, R&D, and Supply Chain, partnering directly with CMF Designers to execute color, material, and finish direction—including coatings, platings, textures, and cosmetic standards—from concept through high-volume mass production.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) through development, ramp-up, mass production, and expansion, focusing on CMF surfaces and finishes
- Partnering with CMF Design teams to translate design direction into manufacturable, scalable, quality-controlled processes
- Owning and maintaining master color/material standards, golden samples, and build units throughout the product lifecycle with full traceability
- Developing and implementing quality systems, control plans, and measurement methods (colorimetry, spectrophotometry, gloss/sheen measurement) for PVD, anodization, electroplating, laser texturing/etching, and soft-touch coatings
- Leading build readiness reviews focused on CMF quality, equipment readiness, process qualification, and cosmetic/finish data analysis
- Identifying and communicating CMF-specific process risks (color shift, adhesion, mura, orange peel, pinholes, texture inconsistency) using data-driven approaches
- Analyzing data to establish cosmetic and finish spec limits (Delta-E, gloss units, texture roughness, adhesion, corrosion/wear resistance) and corresponding process control limits
- Conducting recurring reviews with CMF Designers and process engineers to align on targets, schedules, and sample status
- Scaling suppliers and processes to meet production goals including yield, line capacity (UPH), process capability (CPK), and resource requirements
- Conducting supplier audits and driving continuous improvement initiatives for CMF performance
You will be the primary quality liaison between CMF Designers, Product Design, Manufacturing, and suppliers, championing a culture of quality and aesthetic consistency. This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in the San Francisco office, with up to 40% domestic and international travel.
Requirements:
- 7+ years in Supplier Manufacturing Quality Engineering, Process Engineering, or CMF/Surface Finishing Engineering with direct exposure to coatings, platings, or surface treatment processes
- Experience with final assembly factories and mechanical enclosures and/or electronics suppliers
- Experience in supplier quality engineering for high-volume handheld/wearable and/or consumer products with high cosmetic standards
- Experience qualifying and auditing surface finishing processes: PVD, anodization (Type II/Type III), electroplating, laser texturing/etching, soft-touch/soft-feel coatings, and painting
- Deep knowledge of color science and measurement fundamentals (colorimetry, spectrophotometry, Delta-E, gloss/sheen measurement) and translation to production specs
- Understanding of quality principles and tools: GRR, SPC, FA/CA, 8D, FMEA, DOEs, and finish-specific test methods (ASTM D3359 adhesion/tape-pull, salt spray/corrosion resistance, abrasion/wear resistance, thermal shock testing)
- Understanding of manufacturing principles: DFM, SOP, GD&T, Six Sigma, LEAN
- Self-driven problem solver thriving in demanding, fast-paced, iterative design environments with ability to pivot as direction evolves
- Excellent organizational skills managing large volumes of physical samples, master standards, and documentation across concurrent programs
- Strong communication skills translating complex CMF and quality concepts for designers, engineers, and manufacturing partners
- Ability to set up systems capturing reliable, meaningful data for process improvements and design enhancement
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 40%
