Toi Labs builds AI-powered smart toilet seats (TrueLoo®) that monitor in-home health by optically scanning and analyzing waste to surface health signals like dehydration, GI bleeding, UTI risk, and constipation—without requiring behavior change. The product is deployed across senior living communities and has been recognized by TIME as one of the Best Inventions. The company is backed by leading bathroom-fixture manufacturers and the NIH.
In this role, you will own the complete cloud backend, device data pipeline, and embedded application software for a growing fleet of devices in the field. You'll be responsible for the entire chain: moving images and sensor data from embedded Linux devices in real bathrooms, through cloud processing, into datasets for the ML team and alerts for customers. This is a high-autonomy position on a small team where you'll have significant influence over system architecture and implementation.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and operate scalable cloud infrastructure and backend services
- Build and maintain data pipelines and APIs that move device imagery and telemetry from field devices into analysis and customer-facing insights
- Own reliability, monitoring, alerting, CI/CD, and infrastructure-as-code
- Develop and maintain application software running on field-deployed embedded Linux devices, plus fleet-management tooling (OTA updates, provisioning, remote diagnostics)
- Partner with the ML team on dataset generation, labeling infrastructure, and model deployment
- Contribute to design controls, validation, and regulatory documentation supporting clinical work and FDA pathway
You'll report to the Software (ML and Firmware) Lead and work in a fully remote environment within the US. The company will ship a real TrueLoo® test unit and fixtures to your location. This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of hardware, AI, machine learning, and clinical outcomes on a product that measurably impacts how older adults are cared for.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of professional experience building and operating production cloud systems (AWS preferred; GCP or Azure acceptable)
- 5+ years writing production Python
- Strong DevOps fundamentals: CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, observability, alerting
- Solid grounding in networking and security practices
- Production experience with PostgreSQL or comparable OLTP database
- Track record of owning projects end-to-end without close supervision and picking up unfamiliar technology quickly
- Clear written communication (most coordination is asynchronous)
- Genuine interest in health technology and comfort with early-stage company pace and ambiguity
NICE TO HAVE:
- Application code for embedded Linux devices (Python or otherwise)
- IoT fleet management experience (OTA updates, device provisioning, remote debugging at scale)
- Experience in regulated environments (medical devices, IEC 62304, FDA design controls, HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11)
- Data warehousing, OLAP, and modeling (Snowflake, BigQuery, dbt)
- Image or video data pipelines for computer vision teams
- EMR/EHR integrations (HL7, FHIR)
- Systems programming in C/C++ or Rust
