Vizzia is building video surveillance and enforcement products for public sector clients. The company currently serves 250+ local authorities for waste management and is expanding into Safety with two new product lines: video-based traffic enforcement (launching in the UK) and ANPR (automatic number plate recognition). Both products share a technical architecture: field-deployed camera units, an edge-to-cloud pipeline, and a SaaS platform for officers. The backend must handle strict compliance requirements including French data residency (SecNumCloud), evidential integrity, and end-to-end traceability.
You will join Jérémy Fornarino (Tech Lead) as the second backend engineer on the Safety product line. This is a high-ownership role spanning the full technical stack from edge devices to cloud infrastructure.
Key responsibilities:
**Edge Backend**: Build and operate services running on field units, including camera communication protocols (VAPIX, ISAPI, ONVIF), NX Witness integration, and local SQLite storage. Optimize CPU and RAM on resource-constrained devices and minimize 4G/5G bandwidth for the video pipeline. Debug production units via SSH, logs, and fleet-wide incident triage.
**Cloud Backend**: Design and operate Hono APIs, event-driven workers on the LavinMQ message bus, and the Postgres/Drizzle data layer. Orchestrate fleet operations from the cloud, manage processing pipelines, and guarantee data resynchronization after network outages with zero data loss. Deploy and operate infrastructure using GitHub Actions, Helm, GKE, and Datadog monitoring.
**Production Shipping**: Co-own both enforcement and ANPR projects from technical specification through production. Work with the PM and legal/compliance teams to ensure evidential integrity, audit trails, retention/purge policies, and GDPR compliance. Architect the shared ingestion and edge-to-cloud layer both products depend on. Lead production incident response for edge or cloud issues independently.
**Architecture & Quality**: Write and review Architecture Decision Records (ADRs). Ship tested modules, harden critical code paths (workers, pipelines), and leverage CI to catch regressions. Maintain monorepo conventions using moon, bun, and ten bounded contexts.
Current tech stack: TypeScript end-to-end, bun, Hono, Drizzle, Postgres (cloud), SQLite (edge), LavinMQ, moon monorepo, GKE, Datadog.
**Requirements**
- 4–8 years of backend engineering experience, with a significant portion in SaaS
- Production experience with TypeScript/Node.js; must be operational from day one
- Proven experience building and operating event-driven distributed systems in production: message buses, workers, idempotency, retries, structured logging, monitoring, and incident response
- Engineering degree or master's degree
- Curiosity about systems, networks, and protocols; comfort debugging unusual camera protocols and embedded device issues
- Proficiency with AI coding tools while maintaining code quality
Bonus (not required): video/streaming experience (codecs, containers, VMS), IoT, embedded systems, or robotics background. Domain knowledge can offset a shorter SaaS track record.
