SumUp is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the newly formed Commercial Systems and Intelligence squad within the Acquisition Mission. This team sits at the intersection of data, backend engineering, and sales operations, building infrastructure that powers merchant acquisition attribution, commission calculation, and merchant lifecycle understanding.
The role involves automating currently manual processes and building systems that sales representatives, leadership, and analysts can trust. You will join at the squad's inception, helping shape its architecture, working practices, and standards.
Key responsibilities include:
- Aggregating data across the SumUp ecosystem to determine which acquisition channel or sales agent drove merchant actions (signups, product adoption)
- Establishing data models, API contracts, and rule definitions to automate commission workflows for field sales, tele-sales, partnerships, and merchant referrals
- Building the Lifecycle Event Log in collaboration with the Merchant Intelligence squad—a centralized store of curated merchant lifecycle events used across attribution, recommendations, customer support, and sales
- Developing internal backoffices and APIs for sales representatives and leaders to monitor commissions, modify plans, manage portfolios, and resolve disputes
- Defining and documenting API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns for other engineering teams
- Establishing best practices for testing, observability, and incident response within the newly formed squad
- Using AI and agentic coding tools deliberately to scaffold services, write tests, explore code, and draft documentation while maintaining full accountability
You will work in an office-first setup in Berlin, collaborating with SumUppers globally. SumUp serves over 4 million businesses in 36 markets and has a team of 3,000+ employees from 90+ nationalities.
Requirements:
- Strong backend engineering background in Go, or typed-language generalist ready to ramp quickly
- Experience designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts, versioning, and integration patterns
- Fluency in relational and analytical databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) with ability to choose the right tool for the use case
- Experience building Kafka-based, event-driven systems; understanding of event sourcing and CDC patterns
- Background in auditable, high-trust systems where decisions must be traceable (fintech, payments, or similar domains)
- Experience building services from scratch in greenfield, early-stage squads with limited prior context
- Strong practices in testing, observability, and incident response, treating them as first-class concerns
- Resourcefulness and adaptability; end-to-end ownership; ability to do more with less and adjust quickly as priorities shift
- Ability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences, translating fuzzy problems into clear engineering work and explaining trade-offs
- Pragmatism—knowing when good enough ships value and when something needs to be done properly
- Mentorship instincts; raising the bar for people around you, not just your own output
