Join SumUp's newly formed Commercial Systems and Intelligence squad, sitting at the intersection of data, backend engineering, and sales operations. You'll build infrastructure that powers merchant acquisition attribution, commission calculation, and merchant lifecycle understanding—currently largely manual processes that need automation and trust.
Key responsibilities:
- Aggregate data across the SumUp ecosystem to determine which acquisition channel or sales agent drove merchant actions (signups, product adoption)
- Establish data models, API contracts, and rule definitions to automate commission workflows for field/tele-sales, partnerships, and referrals
- Build the Lifecycle Event Log in collaboration with the Merchant Intelligence squad—a centralized store of curated merchant events (signups, product usage, verification, purchases) used across attribution, recommendations, support, and sales
- Develop internal backoffices and APIs for sales representatives and leaders to monitor commissions, modify plans, manage portfolios, and resolve disputes
- Define and document API contracts, schemas, and integration patterns for other engineering teams
- Establish best practices for testing, observability, and incident response in a newly formed squad
- Use AI and agentic coding tools deliberately to scaffold services, write tests, explore code, and draft documentation while maintaining full accountability
You'll join at the very beginning, helping shape how the squad works, its architecture, and its standards. The role is office-first based in Berlin (note: posting lists Cologne but company context indicates Berlin office).
Requirements:
- Strong backend engineering background in Go, or typed-language generalist ready to ramp quickly
- Experience designing APIs and distributed systems with clear contracts, versioning, and integration patterns
- Fluency in relational and analytical databases (PostgreSQL, Snowflake) with ability to choose the right tool for the use case
- Experience building Kafka-based, event-driven systems; understanding of event sourcing and CDC patterns
- Background in auditable, high-trust systems where every decision is traceable (fintech, payments, or similar domains)
- Experience building services from scratch in greenfield, early-stage squads with limited prior context
- Strong testing, observability, and incident response practices; treat these as first-class concerns
- Resourceful and adaptable; take end-to-end ownership, do more with less, adjust quickly as priorities shift
- Ability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences; translate fuzzy problems into clear engineering work and explain trade-offs to engineers and sales stakeholders
- Pragmatic mindset; know when good enough ships value and when something needs to be done properly
- Mentorship instincts; raise the bar for people around you, not just your own output
