Thndr is a fintech platform democratizing investing across the MENA region, with 5.5M+ app downloads and EGP 1B+ average daily traded value. The Experience Squad owns critical user-facing backend systems that every user passes through: onboarding, identity verification, account approval, authentication, and engagement pipelines. You will also own systems supporting Savings, Thndr Gold, the forthcoming Thndr Card, real estate products, and client domain services.
The role spans ~20 services across Egypt and UAE, several classified as Tier 1. Operational excellence is non-negotiable—reliability, monitoring, and incident response are core to the job. The work bridges product innovation and operational reality: you might build OAuth flows for third-party integrations one moment, integrate AML service providers the next, and navigate compliance requirements with policy teams. You sit between product teams shipping features, operations and finance teams who depend on your systems, and back-office squads whose capabilities you build upon.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will own a subset of domains end-to-end: know them better than anyone, set technical direction, and be accountable for their health (latency, error rates, on-call, technical debt). You will lead cross-squad projects by breaking down ambiguous product asks into plans, sequencing work, pulling in needed people, unblocking them, and shipping. You design systems that scale and degrade gracefully, handling third-party timeouts, rate limits, and outages through idempotency, retries, sensible fallbacks, and contained failure modes. You raise the bar on quality and operational discipline by promoting observability culture, favoring small independently-shippable PRs, and defining measurable SLOs for critical flows. You work closely with product, design, and data teams—pushing back on bad requirements is expected. You partner with operations, CX, and compliance teams who rely on your systems to open accounts, resolve issues, and maintain regulatory compliance. As Thndr expands beyond Egypt, UAE, and the US, you will help bring your domains to new markets.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Experience with distributed systems and clear understanding of scaling, dependency latency, queue backups, and mid-flight deploys
- Impact-driven and product-minded; prioritize user outcomes over technical elegance
- Project management and leadership skills: scoping, sequencing, status communication, and bringing other engineers along
- Confidence owning systems end-to-end from design through production and on-call; focus on real-user behavior and incident root-cause analysis
- Familiarity with stack or confidence to learn quickly: Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, Redis, Kubernetes
- Fintech experience appreciated—awareness of domain-critical flows involving money, identity, and regulation
- Strong cross-team communication with engineers, product, operations, and compliance teams
