myTomorrows is a global healthtech company that breaks down barriers for patients seeking treatment options. The company operates an AI-powered platform connecting patients, healthcare professionals, trial sites, and BioPharma companies to streamline access to drugs in development. With a presence in 134 countries, myTomorrows has supported over 17,000 patients and earned the trust of 60+ BioPharma companies. The company recently closed a €25M investment round. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will develop and maintain the platform infrastructure powering myTomorrows' products. You'll design scalable, reliable, and high-performance backend systems while working closely with Frontend Engineers, DevOps Engineers, and other stakeholders. Key responsibilities include designing and implementing scalable backend systems and microservices, collaborating with development and QA teams to ensure high availability and security, working with DevOps on continuous delivery and deployment, identifying platform improvements, maintaining system documentation, and mentoring junior backend team members. The tech stack is fully cloud-native on AWS, built with Python, FastAPI, Pydantic, and SQLAlchemy (MySQL). Applications are containerized with Docker, and the team uses GitHub Actions for CI/CD along with tools like Renovate, Ruff, UV, and Prek. The company is expanding capabilities in knowledge graphs (Neo4j) and additional database technologies (DynamoDB). Success in the first six months means building trust with Product, Frontend, and DevOps peers while taking ownership of 2-3 domain APIs/services. You'll establish an API-first workflow starting from use cases, propose and socialize OpenAPI specs, and implement in FastAPI with Pydantic models. You'll deliver impactful API features end-to-end (design, implementation, tests, documentation) consumed by internal and external clients. You'll raise API robustness through strong validation, consistent error models, pagination, idempotency, and backward-compatible versioning with automated contract tests. You'll improve reliability and performance by adding observability (metrics, logs, tracing) and defining SLIs/SLOs for key endpoints. You'll make safe database changes in MySQL with SQLAlchemy migrations, optimize critical queries, and contribute to data access patterns. You'll strengthen API security (authN/authZ, scoped tokens, least-privilege access, secrets management, rate limiting) and write clear API documentation while mentoring junior engineers. The company offers competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and an Employee Stock Option Plan. Additional benefits include a learning and development budget, attractive pension plan (fully covered), hybrid working model, policies supporting working parents, healthy lunch at the Amsterdam office, unlimited access to professional guidance via OpenUp, and monthly culture events plus an annual company-wide celebration. REQUIREMENTS: - Proficiency in Python programming language - 4+ years of experience in backend engineering or related field - Experience with relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle) - Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) - Experience with containerization technologies (Docker and Kubernetes) - Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team - Strong communication skills and ability to work with stakeholders across the organization - Excellent English communication skills - Must live within commuting distance to Amsterdam office (not remote)
