Monte Carlo is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to build the core of its agent trust platform—the backend services, distributed systems, and agentic workflows that enable enterprises to monitor and trust AI in production. The role is primarily backend-focused but includes fullstack responsibilities, including React frontend work when needed to complete features. In this role, you will take vague problem statements from concept to production, owning the full lifecycle: prototyping, architecture design, implementation, testing, deployment, and post-launch ownership. You'll build and run production-grade backend services and APIs in Python that power Monte Carlo's core platform and agentic systems. You'll design and scale distributed systems that remain reliable, observable, and performant as customer data and agent volume grow. You'll start with simple, flexible designs and evolve them as the product and company scale, avoiding over-engineering. You'll also build and maintain data pipelines supporting analytics, ML, and customer-facing features, and collaborate with product, ML, and infrastructure teams to ship customer value. Monte Carlo is a Series D company ($236M raised) backed by Accel, Redpoint, Notable Capital, ICONIQ Growth, and Salesforce Ventures. The company created the data observability category and is now establishing the agent trust category. Customers include HubSpot, Fox, Nasdaq, Toast, and Mercado Libre. The company is remote-first by design and recognized as a Best Workplace for remote work. REQUIREMENTS: - 5+ years shipping production backend services - Strong Python or equivalent backend language; real experience designing, running, and debugging APIs and services under load - Demonstrated experience building and scaling distributed architectures; understanding of tradeoffs around reliability, consistency, and observability from running systems in production - Proven 0-to-1 ownership: taking ambiguous problems from blank page to deployed product (prototype, architecture, build, testing, deploy); ability to move with urgency and treat outcomes as yours - Experience with data pipelines or data-heavy systems on AWS and cloud-native services - Fullstack capability with frontend experience, ideally React, to ship complete features - Strong plus: PySpark, ML platform experience, or agentic/LLM-powered systems experience NOT A FIT IF: - You require detailed specs before building - Your backend experience is primarily CRUD apps on single services, not scaled distributed systems - You prefer to hand off testing, deployment, and on-call responsibilities - You are primarily a frontend engineer seeking to transition into backend
