Midnite is a next-generation sports betting and gaming platform with over 400,000 players. The company operates at high pace with a focus on sharp product thinking, bold branding, and fast execution. They are launching in Canada and scaling across markets. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Platform Engineering team, you will be a senior individual contributor working close to the core of the product platform. You'll focus on understanding how systems fit together, improving service boundaries and reliability, and building technical foundations that help teams move faster and safer. In your first few months, you will get deep into existing services to understand boundaries and dependencies, contribute to platform work behind Midnite's Canada launch including data separation and regional readiness, and ship meaningful backend/platform improvements while owning projects end to end. The platform is primarily built in Python and hosted on AWS, using Flask/FastAPI, Pytest, Mypy, Docker, PostgreSQL, SQS/Kafka, S3, and Terraform, with daily deployments. Key responsibilities include: designing and building backend and platform systems supporting core product; working on complex platform problems across scalability, reliability, service isolation, and regional readiness; defining clean boundaries and interfaces across services; contributing to multi-region and market expansion systems; improving observability, deployment practices, and operational maturity; contributing production code, reviews, and technical design; identifying failure points and making the platform more resilient. You will collaborate with engineers across Canada, the UK, and Australia, requiring strong async communication and ownership. You'll take high-level technical direction and independently drive work through delivery, partner with the Platform team on architecture decisions, and communicate clearly across time zones. The company uses Claude, Linear, Notion, Slack, and modern Mac-based setups to support developer productivity. Benefits include private healthcare coverage, 33 days annual leave (increasing with tenure), flexible working with home office support, and employer-matched RRSP pension plan with 3% company match. REQUIREMENTS: - Strong senior-level backend or platform engineering experience - Experience independently delivering complex technical projects - Strong backend capability in Python, or comparable modern language (Go, Rust, Java, Scala) with ability to ramp on Python quickly - Strong understanding of distributed systems, scalability, and architecture trade-offs - Experience with microservices, service boundaries, eventual consistency, data separation, or reliability engineering - Comfortable working across app-layer systems and platform/infrastructure concerns - Strong written communication and ability to work effectively across time zones - High ownership, strong judgement, and comfort operating in ambiguity
