Augustus is building a modern bank from scratch, combining a real national bank charter with Marble, a proprietary core banking system. The company is backed by $200M+ from top-tier investors including Valar Ventures, Tiger Global, and founders of Nubank, Ramp, Deel, and others. They are regulated in Europe and expanding to build a US team while growing rapidly in Europe.
You will own security engineering end-to-end across application, infrastructure, and incident response. You will partner with product and platform teams during design, write and ship security automation in production, and lead high-quality incident response. Your focus will be on measurable risk reduction while maintaining product velocity.
In your first six months, you will:
- Months 1-2: Enforce a Secure Software Development Lifecycle (SSDLC) across EU-live payment/ledger services and US launch-critical services, ensuring 100% of net-new Tier-1 changes follow required design, build, and release checkpoints.
- Months 3-4: Build an AI-native product-security review pipeline that auto-triages code, dependency, and Infrastructure-as-Code findings by service criticality, proposes fixes in pull requests, and reduces non-actionable alerts.
- Months 5-6: Expand baseline coverage to ≥85% of Tier-1 services for workload identity hardening, secret management, runtime audit logging, and dependency monitoring; establish monthly control-evidence reporting.
You will thrive at Augustus if you are relentless, set high bars for yourself, shape the game without waiting for playbooks, and think in systems rather than manual effort. You should be comfortable writing production-grade code, using AI tooling to accelerate security work, and pushing ambiguous work forward while bringing stakeholders along.
This role is not for you if you prefer advisory-only security roles, need tightly scoped tickets, avoid production system ownership, or optimize for stability over change.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Extensive hands-on experience in security engineering, product security, cloud security, or detection/response engineering in production environments
- Demonstrated expertise securing cloud-based systems (IAM, networking, logging, key management, workload isolation) and CI/CD pipelines
- Proven experience building at least one security automation or detection capability actively used in production
- Experience in fintech, payments, banking, or another regulated environment with audit and control evidence requirements
- Experience with modern security tooling, especially SIEM/SOAR and cloud security platforms
- Located in (or willing to relocate to) Berlin and able to work in-office 3 days/week
