Willow Health is seeking a Medical Director—a senior practicing psychiatrist to lead clinical operations and quality for a virtual-first crisis stabilization and bridge care platform serving adults with behavioral health conditions.
In this working clinical leadership role, you will carry your own patient panel (approximately 50% direct care), supervise psychiatric nurse practitioners, and own day-to-day clinical operations including escalations, coverage decisions, case review, and level-of-care determinations. You report to the Chief Medical Officer and partner closely with clinical supervisors, clinical operations, compliance, and product teams.
Key responsibilities include:
- Direct patient care: psychiatric evaluations, medication management, crisis psychotherapy, and same-day urgent assessments for high-acuity and diagnostically complex patients, including those with co-occurring substance use disorders.
- Supervision: serve as supervising or collaborating physician for NPs per New York and North Carolina requirements; provide real-time clinical backup; run supervision and case conferences; complete competency assessments and performance reviews.
- Daily operations: own clinical protocols, escalation pathways, after-hours procedures, and clinical standards; triage escalations; work with clinical supervisors on capacity, scheduling, and coverage; ensure safe caseload ranges and acuity mix; escalate conflicts to the CMO as needed.
- Quality and safety: lead adverse event and near-miss review; use clinical oversight dashboards to direct intervention; attend quality committee and peer review.
- Compliance: maintain and update clinical protocols and documentation templates; support state regulatory requirements; ensure prescribing practice (including controlled substances via telehealth) meets federal and state law.
- Growth: interview and onboard psychiatric prescribers; contribute clinical design to new programs and market launches; represent Willow to hospital partners and payers.
Working hours are Monday–Friday, 10:30 AM–7:30 PM Eastern Time. This is a full-time, exempt position designed for a psychiatrist who wants to collaborate in building and improving a care model in a growth-stage setting.
Requirements:
- MD or DO with completed ACGME-accredited psychiatry residency.
- Board certification in psychiatry by the ABPN.
- Active, unrestricted medical licenses in New York and North Carolina (or ability to obtain the second within 90 days).
- Active DEA registration.
- Minimum three years of post-residency clinical practice.
- Demonstrated experience supervising or collaborating with nurse practitioners.
- Direct experience with acute or crisis psychiatry (emergency psychiatry, consult-liaison, inpatient, partial hospitalization, ACT, or mobile crisis).
- Comfort practicing and leading in a telehealth environment.
Preferred qualifications:
- Board certification or substantive experience in addiction psychiatry or child and adolescent psychiatry.
- Prior medical director or clinical leadership role, ideally in a growth-stage or startup setting.
- Familiarity with Medicaid behavioral health delivery in New York or North Carolina.
