Zinc is a background screening and compliance platform serving employers across regulated and unregulated sectors including financial services, healthcare, education, security and the public sector. This is a new role in the Regulatory Compliance team, part of Zinc's Risk function.
You will own the interpretation of regulations that underpin Zinc's screening checks, ensuring that product, customer, and commercial teams have clear, defensible answers. You'll work closely with Legal, Product, InfoSec and commercial teams, and extend the team's reach through fractional specialists and external counsel.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own the regulatory interpretation for checks including Right to Work, FCA, CQC, Ofsted, BS7858, BPSS and public sector vetting frameworks. Work with the Product team on how these are applied in the platform.
- Advise on sector-specific vetting requirements including fitness and propriety, SM&CR, KCSIE, EYFS and other regulator requirements.
- Lead on international frameworks covering global criminal record and right to work checks, GDPR in a screening context, US FCRA and state law.
- Serve as the go-to expert for complex regulatory questions from sales, account management and customer success. Join customer and prospect calls where regulatory depth is needed and provide input to tenders and RFPs.
- Review new product features, checks and user flows through a regulatory lens. Help translate new legislation and guidance into clear product requirements.
- Horizon scan across UK, EU, US and APAC markets, tracking regulatory developments and turning them into practical guidance to help commercial teams become more self-sufficient.
- Manage fractional regulatory experts and external counsel alongside the Head of Regulatory Compliance, including scoping, briefing and quality-checking.
You'll start as a hands-on individual contributor with room to grow as the company expands regulated-sector and international coverage. While a legal background is helpful, the company is open to regulatory and compliance professionals from diverse backgrounds. What matters is the ability to understand regulatory frameworks, form clear views and explain them to non-specialists.
Requirements:
- A regulatory or compliance background with experience interpreting regulation in legal practice, in-house roles, at a regulator, or in a compliance function. Experience across multiple sectors is a strong plus.
- Ability to provide defensible regulatory views in plain English, knowing when to escalate and when to decide.
- Quick to get up to speed on new regulatory frameworks and comfortable reading legislation, statutory guidance and regulator publications.
- Commercially minded and comfortable on customer and prospect calls, understanding that compliance must work in practice.
- Pragmatic approach to risk, recognizing that not all regulations carry equal weight and focusing on proper compliance with what matters.
- Strong collaboration skills with Product, Legal and commercial teams, able to simplify without over-simplifying.
- Bonus experience in background screening, HR tech, recruitment, DBS, right to work, FCA regulation, UK GDPR in employment context, or managing external advisers.
