Encord is building the universal data layer for AI, serving 300+ AI teams and trusted by companies like Woven by Toyota, AXA, UiPath, and Zipline. The company has raised $60M in Series C funding and is scaling rapidly from 100 to 180+ employees, focused on the frontier of physical AI and robotics. You will join the Foundations team, which builds the data systems enabling frontier robotics labs to generate, understand, train, and test on massive volumes of robotics data. This role focuses on solving the hardest problems in AI: distributed, data-intensive systems that must remain correct and performant at scale. You'll handle large 3D scenes, hour-long videos, LIDAR point clouds, and ML inference, all under tight performance and operational budgets. Key responsibilities: - Design, build, deploy, and own data systems processing petabytes of data across billions of items, from architectural decisions through deployment, monitoring, and impact measurement - Build robust distributed systems and reason carefully about failure modes and behavior under load - Design performant protocols and APIs, tackling complex domains and immense scale with correct and pragmatic solutions while moving fast and maintaining engineering quality - Contribute knowledge and experience as part of a high-performing team You are someone who has personally developed and maintained systems from scratch and understands the trade-offs involved in building reliable, performant software at speed. You may not have AI or ML experience—that's fine if you're an incredibly fast and curious learner who can pick up new topics and become an expert quickly. You excel under pressure and uncertainty, attack the heart of problems, and make the right trade-offs repeatedly. You deeply care about the systems you build, think through failure modes, ship readable and bulletproof code, and deliver today rather than next week. You thrive as a member of a high-performing team, contribute your best work, and help others do the same. Benefits include competitive salary with meaningful equity, strong in-person culture (most team members work from the London office 4+ days/week), 25 days annual leave plus UK public holidays, annual learning & development budget, travel for customer visits and events across the UK and Europe, company lunches twice weekly, and monthly socials with bi-annual team offsites. REQUIREMENTS: - 1–5+ years building and operating serious institutional-scale systems - Fluency in Python or TypeScript and deep understanding of at least one of Rust, C++, Java, or Go - Solid core CS knowledge in data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems concepts (databases, replication, partitioning, queuing, caching) and how they behave under load - Experience owning services in production and improving quality through code reviews, testing, rollout, and monitoring - Plus: experience at a trading firm, market maker, hedge fund, or exchange (trading systems, market data pipelines, tick or time-series stores, risk engines, ML/QR research pipelines); experience with large data migrations or re-architecture projects
