OpenAI's Strategic Futures team is seeking a Program Manager and Chief of Staff to drive execution for a small, research-focused internal think tank exploring how advanced AI could reshape public policy, institutions, and society.
You will serve as the operational backbone for the Strategic Futures leader, translating broad strategic priorities into coordinated execution plans, establishing lightweight operating systems (roadmaps, project trackers, decision logs), and ensuring high-quality research and writing moves forward with clarity and momentum.
Key responsibilities include:
- Partner with the team leader to convert strategic direction into clear priorities, operating plans, and concrete deliverables
- Own end-to-end planning and execution across research projects, publications, cross-functional collaborations, and public-facing work
- Develop structured workplans with clear outcomes, owners, milestones, timelines, and dependencies
- Establish operating rhythms that provide visibility and accountability without unnecessary process overhead
- Coordinate across Global Affairs, Legal, Research, product policy, safety, Communications, and other teams
- Build productive internal relationships and ensure Strategic Futures has a clear organizational presence
- Prepare executive briefings, strategic updates, presentations, decision documents, and talking points
- Plan and run effective meetings, capturing decisions and ensuring follow-through
- Anticipate bottlenecks and proactively develop solutions
- Maintain portfolio visibility to support prioritization and resource-allocation decisions
- Coordinate internal review and approval processes for publications and public-facing work
- Develop AI-enabled workflows to improve project management, knowledge sharing, and team effectiveness
- Help evolve the team's operating model and ways of working as it scales
Ideal candidates bring 5+ years in chief-of-staff, program management, strategic operations, research operations, consulting, policy, or communications roles. You excel at driving complex initiatives with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities, creating clarity in ambiguous environments, and moving fluidly between strategy and execution. You're an exceptional writer and synthesizer, can engage credibly with subject-matter experts, exercise sound judgment on sensitive initiatives, and proactively identify what needs to happen next. Strong interest in advanced AI and its long-term implications for governance and society is essential. Proficiency with AI tools for operational workflows is valued.
