OpenAI's Hardware organization is developing AI-native silicon and system-level solutions for advanced AI workloads. This role is responsible for driving technical initiatives related to manufacturing, quality, and reliability of AI supercomputer hardware systems from concept through launch and mass production.
You will own integrated manufacturing and quality readiness across L6, L10, and L11 product levels, establishing clear gates, milestones, deliverables, and closure criteria. Key responsibilities include:
- Lead readiness of process flows, tooling, fixtures, assembly operations, test interfaces, and production controls; review and contribute to work instructions.
- Translate product requirements into qualification plans, process controls, test requirements, and acceptance criteria in collaboration with design engineering and area subject matter experts.
- Coordinate and drive execution of product and process qualification, reliability testing, and validation; maintain traceable evidence of compliance with performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements.
- Own supplier and line scorecards using yield, defect tracking, process capability, and reliability data to assess process health, identify trends, prioritize improvements, and verify effectiveness.
- Lead containment, failure analysis, root cause investigation, and corrective actions for issues during development, production, and deployment; drive actions to closure with evidence of effectiveness.
- Work on-site with area SMEs at supplier and sub-supplier locations to assess line readiness, troubleshoot issues, and verify implementation of controls and corrective actions.
- Lead JDM/CM manufacturing and quality audits and performance reviews; drive readiness and control gaps to closure.
- Assess manufacturing and quality impact of design, process, source, and site changes; coordinate validation and control updates.
- Provide evidence-based release recommendations using readiness gate status, qualification evidence, containment status, and remaining risks.
- Manage multiple projects, track progress against milestones, communicate priorities and risks across functions, and coordinate risk mitigation.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in-office per week. Relocation assistance is offered.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Track record of owning both manufacturing and quality outcomes for complex hardware from new product introduction through production ramp and sustaining operations.
- Hands-on, detail-oriented approach with deep ownership of assigned products, sources, or sites while coordinating specialists across disciplines.
- Understanding of high-performance computing hardware and manufacturing/quality risks across component, system, and rack integration (L6, L10, L11).
- Ability to partner closely with design engineering and subject matter experts to assess changes, define validation needs, and integrate technical decisions.
- Significant experience building integrated readiness plans, managing qualification gates and dependencies, and using technical evidence for release recommendations.
- Extensive experience working with multinational JDM/CM partners on manufacturing readiness, process controls, yield improvement, quality, reliability, and issue closure.
- Familiarity with mechanical and electrical Design for Quality (DFQ), Excellence (DFX), Manufacturability (DFM), Assembly (DFA), Test (DFT), and Reliability (DFR).
- Experience leading structured problem-solving and root cause analysis using methods such as 8D, 5 Whys, and fishbone analysis, including validation of corrective-action effectiveness.
- Proficiency with statistical methods and manufacturing/quality data to understand yield, defects, process capability, and reliability; ability to communicate findings through scorecards.
- Experience qualifying processes or sources, evaluating technical equivalency, and managing risks across suppliers, sites, and product/process interfaces.
- Comfort with ambiguity and changing conditions; ability to make clear decisions, document risks, escalate issues, and maintain ownership through closure.
- May need to meet certain legal status requirements per U.S. export control laws and regulations.
