Benchling is an AI platform for biotech R&D used by over 200,000 scientists globally, including major biopharma companies like Sanofi and Moderna. The company is rebuilding biotech for the AI era by enabling scientists to design experiments, capture structured data, and run AI agents directly in their workflows.
You will own prioritization and roadmap for Benchling's core infrastructure teams. Your primary responsibility is converting engineering constraints, customer pain, and business priorities into a clear, defensible roadmap. You'll make prioritization calls with team support to focus on highest-impact work, helping the business understand infrastructure constraints and opportunities while keeping infrastructure teams connected to business needs for strategic long-term investments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own infrastructure direction by converting recurring engineering pain, customer requests, and business priorities into a prioritized, outcome-focused roadmap with clear rationale
- Conduct customer discovery to identify latent infrastructure needs within engineering teams and external customer requirements around scale, performance, and technical direction
- Make and hold prioritization calls, explaining tradeoffs to both engineering and executive stakeholders when priorities conflict
- Build business cases that translate infrastructure investment into actionable terms for the organization
- Define problems and requirements without dictating technical solutions, enabling engineering to build effectively
- Coordinate across organizational teams, representing infrastructure priorities to dependent teams and vice versa, with shared program management responsibility
- Define and report on outcome metrics (reliability, cost, adoption, developer time saved, etc.) and hold the roadmap accountable
- Partner with Engineering, Finance, Security, and Procurement on cloud economics, spend forecasting, cost optimization, vendor evaluation, and strategic infrastructure investments
You are not expected to be a systems architect or write technical designs, but you must understand infrastructure well enough to make crisp trade-off calls with engineering under incomplete information.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of product management experience with direct exposure to infrastructure, platform, or developer-facing systems
- Track record of making real prioritization calls under pressure, not just facilitating consensus; ability to describe saying no to senior stakeholders
- Comfort translating technical constraints into business narrative and business priorities into technical requirements in both directions
- Strong communication skills
- Sufficient technical fluency to be credible with engineers without being the most technical person in the room
