Wave is building financial services for Africa, with a mission to make it the first cashless continent. The company operates in 9 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa and has millions of users. Wave is the largest financial institution in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire, backed by top-tier investors including Sequoia, Stripe, Ribbit Capital, and Y Combinator. As a Product Engineer, you will own end-to-end product development—from understanding problems to shipping solutions to users and supporting customer resolution. You'll join an autonomous, cross-functional team led by a Product Manager and Engineering Manager or Tech Lead, with significant ownership over features and improvements from design through deployment. Recent projects include enabling in-store payments via Wave, integrating with electrical utilities for bill payments, building payroll apps for business owners, and enabling transportation payments on taxis, trains, and buses. Tech Stack: - Backend: Python 3 (with mypy) - API: GraphQL - Android: Kotlin/Jetpack - iOS: Swift/SwiftUI - Web: TypeScript/React - Database: Postgres/CockroachDB - Infrastructure: GCP/Terraform - Orchestration: Kubernetes All engineers are expected to work across the full stack, including mobile. Prior experience with these technologies is a strong plus but not required. Engineering Culture: Wave emphasizes solving problems over shipping tickets, moving fast with MVPs and small PRs, and favoring reliable, well-understood "boring" technology. The team balances speed with caution on critical areas like money movement, correctness, and security. Simplicity is a strategy to focus energy on serving users. Location & Travel: This is a fully remote role for candidates based in talent hub countries (UK, Spain, Kenya, Ghana) or operating markets in Africa (Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso). Remote team members must travel to operational markets at least once per year for a minimum of 6 consecutive days. Wave provides a $1,200 yearly stipend for coworking meetups. Compensation & Benefits: - Salary up to $152,100 USD (depending on level and location) - Generous equity package - Subsidized health insurance for you and dependents - Retirement contributions (varies by country) - 6 months fully paid parental leave - Subsidized fertility assistance - Flexible vacation (most take 21–30 days plus statutory holidays) - $10,000 annual charitable donation matching Requirements: - Minimum 5 years of professional experience as a product engineer - Fluent in English (bilingual French is a bonus) - Willingness to travel to operating locations at least once per year for a minimum of 6 consecutive days You might be a good fit if you reflexively ask whether code serves user happiness, want to solve hard problems and ask for help when stuck, are excited to learn complex systems, communicate clearly across diverse teams, make things easier for the next engineer, continuously improve as a programmer and colleague, and deeply understand the tools you use.
