Axle Energy is building software infrastructure for the decarbonised energy system, controlling hundreds of thousands of energy assets including vehicle charging, heating systems, and home batteries to shift energy usage to times when electricity is cheap and green. The company operates at high speed in a legacy industry, backed by world-leading investors including Accel. You will be Axle's first product designer, responsible for elevating design quality across the entire organization. Operating in a flat, autonomous structure with small interdisciplinary teams of engineers and product managers, you'll serve as a design pillar—understanding users, leading strategic direction, and ensuring customer needs are always represented. Key responsibilities include: - Understanding user problems and designing experiences to solve them across both B2C and B2B2C products - Building design systems and frameworks (in Claude and code) that enable the team to ship beautiful software faster - Deepening the company's culture of user research and getting into the details of how people experience Axle's products - Leading visual identity and storytelling through web, animation, and video - Working with global clients to improve their user experiences - Providing enablement and coaching to others across the business You'll work on cutting-edge energy products ranging from simple mass-market consumer offerings to advanced tooling for early adopters, solving complex problems where customer experience is critical. The role is based in London with a dog-friendly office around Farringdon. Hybrid working is expected with 2-3 days per week in the office to maximize collaboration. Qualifications and fit: - Energised by ambiguity with a pragmatic, outcome-first approach - Excited about bringing sophisticated technology to broader audiences and willing to engage with technical details - Deeply curious about the world and how people experience it - Strong aesthetic sense with clear understanding of what good design looks like - Experience in user research and design systems is valued - Background in B2B, B2C, or energy/climate tech is a plus but not required
