Reflection AI is seeking a Product Counsel to lead legal support for data acquisition and development initiatives powering frontier AI models, as well as agentic search capabilities. This is a strategic, build-stage role at a research lab focused on making intelligence open and accessible.
You will serve as the primary legal contact for pre-training and data teams, advising on US and international laws and regulations governing data acquisition and utilization for AI training. You will also advise on the evolving legal landscape around agentic and search-based product proposals. Your responsibilities include:
- Providing focused legal advice on intellectual property, privacy, licensing, and AI regulation as they relate to data use for AI training and development
- Designing and implementing data integrity standards and processes to manage risks associated with data acquisition and use
- Developing policies with data and training teams to ensure compliance with data provenance, tracking, and usage requirements
- Establishing a risk-based compliance posture for AI-specific data requirements
- Partnering with cross-functional teams to implement data controls enabling responsible model releases
- Advising on data considerations in commercial and strategic transactions, including partnerships and collaborations
- Supporting the development of agentic capabilities and advising product teams on legal and compliance requirements
- Monitoring regulatory developments from Congress, the White House, the EU, UK, and other authorities, translating them into practical guidance
You will work closely with product, research, engineering, safety, and business operations teams. This role is not about answering one-off legal questions but designing policies, review processes, escalation pathways, and business-facing guidance that enable the company to move quickly while maintaining a mature, defensible compliance posture.
REQUIREMENTS:
- J.D. and active bar membership (or in-house registration) in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Approximately 10+ years of product counselling experience advising technology companies on legal risks, particularly in AI, cloud computing, semiconductors, advanced computing, cybersecurity, infrastructure, data centers, or strategically sensitive technologies
- Strong experience identifying and addressing complex legal issues relating to product, regulatory, intellectual property, commerce, privacy, and other legal risks
- Experience advising on U.S. and international legal, regulatory, and litigation matters applicable to AI products and data usage
- Strong independent judgment and proactive approach in areas where law is evolving, agency guidance is incomplete, or business context does not fit legacy regulatory categories
- Excellent cross-functional communication skills, including ability to explain complex legal requirements to engineers, researchers, infrastructure teams, commercial teams, executives, and non-lawyer operators
- Ideally, prior experience at high-growth technology companies, AI labs, cloud providers, or other technology businesses addressing legal risks in data acquisition and use; bonus for open source experience
- Ideally, prior experience addressing agentic and/or search capabilities in AI development context
