Roblox is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to own and innovate on foundational components of the Roblox Engine, specifically the DataModel—a tree-like structure analogous to a scenegraph in other 3D engines. This role reports to an engineering manager and is based in San Mateo, CA on a hybrid schedule (3 days per week: Tuesday–Thursday).
The Engine DataModel team owns core structures and systems used to build and interact with the DataModel, C++ reflection bindings that form the Engine's Luau API surface for creators, DataModel serialization, and related infrastructure.
In this role, you will:
- Develop high-performance engine code that works across all user-created games on the Roblox platform
- Build core systems and data structures used in the Roblox engine, collaborating with other teams to find universal solutions
- Take full ownership of projects throughout their complete lifecycles
- Execute code that performs optimally on all devices Roblox supports—desktop, mobile, and console clients
You will work on systems-level C++ programming, game engine internals, and performance-critical code. This is a senior technical role requiring deep expertise in low-level systems, memory management, and the ability to architect solutions that scale across millions of concurrent users and diverse hardware platforms.
Requirements:
- Extensive experience developing systems-level C++ code
- Proven experience working on game engine internals
- Demonstrated responsibility for building and maintaining systems that perform optimally
- Strong curiosity about technology developments and low-level CPU behavior (smart pointers, templates, virtual functions, memory management)
- Ability to take ownership of complex technical projects end-to-end
