Roblox is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the Build Surfaces team, which owns the AI-powered workflows that enable creators to build experiences on the Roblox platform. The role spans both Studio and the Roblox App, with direct impact on millions of creators worldwide. The Build team is developing tools across the full creation lifecycle—from generating playable games from text descriptions, to iterating on gameplay and visual design, testing changes, publishing, and analyzing performance. The team is focused on making the iteration cycle faster, gamifying the building experience, and helping creators reach players. These efforts aim to lower barriers to creation and empower anyone to turn an idea into a playable game. In this role, you will lead projects that shape how creators build on Roblox. You'll contribute to development across Build and Studio Assistant surfaces, shipping end-to-end features spanning AI-assisted iteration, direct editing, monetization, analytics, and onboarding. You'll mentor engineers through formal mentoring and leadership by example, own projects from technical specification through execution and launch, and collaborate with product, design, and cross-functional teams to maintain execution quality and velocity. The tech stack primarily includes React, Luau, and occasionally C++, with an emphasis on adaptability to evolving technology. TypeScript and web expertise are valuable indicators of fit for this stack. The role is based in San Mateo, CA, with an expectation of onsite presence Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years of hands-on working experience with a BS degree (or equivalent professional experience) in Computer Science or similar technical field - Experience with programming languages such as C++, Luau, Javascript, or Typescript - Experience managing and navigating complex codebases and system architecture/design - Track record of driving cross-functional projects to build consumer-facing products - Passion for building great user-facing products through continuous improvements and rapid iteration with feedback - Curiosity about new technology and product experiences - Bonus: Experience building agentic tools - Bonus: Familiarity with A/B testing
