Roblox is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to lead safety and content moderation strategy across its platform. You will establish and monitor prevalence measurement methodologies to quantify harmful content and violative behaviors, serving as the authoritative source of truth for organizational safety goals. Your work will include developing and validating comprehensive ground truth datasets for harmful user-generated content, conducting exploratory analysis on emerging threat landscapes, and designing sophisticated experiments for new moderation and safety enforcement features.
You will leverage advanced causal inference methodologies to measure the effectiveness and systemic impacts of safety initiatives on player experience and platform integrity. A key responsibility is communicating strategic insights to leadership and cross-functional partners—translating complex statistical findings into actionable strategies for Product, Engineering, Policy, Compliance, and Legal teams. You will partner with ML and Data Engineering teams to ensure detection systems are built on statistically sound measurement frameworks.
This role sits within Roblox's Data Science & Analytics organization, which drives data-influenced decision-making across the platform through analytical data engineering, product analytics, experimentation, causal inference, statistical modeling, and machine learning. Your focus will be on asset-based content (games, avatars, emerging in-game behaviors) and establishing reliable ground truth datasets.
The office is located in San Mateo, CA, with hybrid flexibility: onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 10+ years of industry experience in data science, economics, analytics, or machine learning engineering
- 7+ years of experience with scripting languages (Python, R) and big data query/processing tools (SQL, Hive, Spark, Airflow)
- Knowledge of ML and Deep Learning via formal training or industry experience
- Ability to apply creative first-principles reasoning to solve ambiguous problems
- Experience developing large-scale safety or moderation systems and working with content platforms, specifically user-generated content
- Advanced degree and/or PhD in Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Math, Economics, or related quantitative field
